Leaks suggest Call of Duty battle royale called Warzone is on the way [Update: It’s official now]

Update: The game’s been confirmed now; we’ve updated at the end.

Just in case you thought the battle royale craze was on its way out, Activision has another one for you. According to a piece on Polygon this morning sourced from an apparently accidentally leaked influencer video, Warzone is a new Call of Duty game with a battle royale bent, launching free-to-play this week.

The video claims the game won’t require Call of Duty Modern Warfare, in spite of previous leaks to the contrary. Player count will cap out at 150 with two game modes, multiple new-to-the-franchise and old maps, and a fast-paced gameplay style.

Gamers will recall that just a few weeks ago, Activision was busying itself chasing a different Call of Duty leaker by attempting to subpoena Reddit, though it seems more like this one was just an unfortunate misclick on a video.

The video was taken down, but it’s been mirrored if you’re up for spoilers. Presumably, Activision will be announcing it shortly anyway.

CoD is one of those franchises that I’ve never liked barring one of their earlier versions, it’s been so long I can’t remember which one it was as it gets lost in the wash of constant rehashed CoD games. And this despite the fact that I’m a big fan of shooters in general, although I also haven’t touched BF since 2 for similar reasons, and miss BF:1942 as that was my favorite there.

Raven who is the team at Activision that works on this franchise made the brilliant old school fantasy shooters; Heretic, Hexen, and Hexen 2 when they were flying solo and then later the so-so Singularity but it feels like their talent is wasted on churning another dull CoD game over and over. I recently went through those old games again and while you need GZDoom or other fan patches/engines to run the games, they’re still really good and often cheap on Steam.

Activision is actually behind EA on jumping on this BR bandwagon, most interesting. In BfN one of the elite bosses you fight in the zombie quests and in co-op Ops is the Sunflower Queen and her tagline is ‘Battle THIS royal’. I rather like that reference to be sure. How this plays out will likely be amusing to watch.

I have been with all three franchises since the very beginning. COD, BF, & MOH. I have been testing for them for years.
