The Daily Grind: What’s your favorite role to play in an MMO group?

Unembraced.

In broadest strokes, a lot of MMOs have embraced the trinity for character design with three roles of tank, DPS, and healer. That’s fine. But even within games that have those roles there’s a lot of variation available. Final Fantasy XIV definitely has those roles as a guiding principle, for example, but your role as healer could involve lots of direct damage or lots of buffing your party members. Your DPS role might be about getting big numbers, or it might be primarily about supporting the rest of the party while you stand in the back without pants on.

Of course, those roles can expand outward, and not every game follows the exact same progression. Maybe your preferred role is doing a bit of damage whilst primarily buffing your party. Maybe you don’t really want to be a main tank, but an off-tank picking up things that get past the main tank. Maybe you just want to heal the party while throwing waves of robots at everything, as City of Heroes did not just permit but encouraged. Not every game lets you fill precisely that role, but you can often get halfway there. So what’s your preferred role in an MMO group?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

For me I love being a dps in general, just for an example most people prefer either to be a Melee dps or ranged dps, but I prefer to spec into both. Which makes the braver class in pso2 my favorite class. I have a katana for most mobs and some bosses and a bow for any mobs and bosses that are a absolute nightmare for Melee dps(whether that be because they can absolutely make you their b*tch thanks to the massive damage they do up close or due to annoying status effects like stun, sleep, poison, burn, and even constant knock downs and ups.). It’s the same in other games not everything can be taken care of with just melee, especially if you are a Lone Wolf Legend (like I often am in games).

PS: I’m kidding about the whole Legend part. If anyone gets the reference please feel free to leave a like.

Tank, there is no other role for me. There is no sound more satisfying than a shield slam or a stock strike. I have dabbled in healing and Barding in Rift was a lot of fun as well; however, nothing quite does it for me like standing in front of the boss and going ham while triple- dog daring the DPS to pull threat off of me. Give me a 4 Mississippi rush and I’ll have that boss on lock- down. Tanks FTW!

In ESO I did Melee DPS for when I’m by myself, Ranged DPS for when I’m with a group.

Crow Control or pure support which is why I don’t play MMOs anymore really. Really enjoyed my bard and enchanter in EQ1 and my bard in Rift to a degree as well. It just seems that the current game market doesn’t want to support, irony, that play style anymore.

My favorite group role is no role. I have enough real roles and responsibilities, no point to add more in the games. So I endorse all modern MMOs where everyone is a tank, a healer, and a DPS in one (Monster Hunter: World) – or at least may switch between them any moment (like class changing in Skyforge depending on the group demand).

Hybrids, I like your classes that are a bit of everything so they can do what is needed on the fly, rather than being pigeon-holed into one thing alone. Like LOTRO’s original Captain class for example before they ruined it.

I honestly don’t care. I’m more hopeful for non-combat content than anything… but for combat focused content I’ll do whatever. It’s similar with many friends, only a few of us really care (and that’s more about physical limitations and disabilities than anything).

I do admit to having a joy in non-standard roles, and doing things a different way. I also admit to enjoying how many people mentioned support and CC with the neutering of that in MMOs…

Support, back when it actually existed and mattered. Enchanters and Bards in Everquest were my favourite, being good at crowd control, buffs, debuffs and mana regen could make or break a group.

When that option isn’t available I am usually a tank.

I adore sending wave after wave of robots in CoH. Ideally, I would just like to buff my team and debuff our foes, never directly attacking. Warframe taught me that their space ninja’s can use powers to setup brutal team combos and it’s made me curious if we could see the trinity change more to a team combo system.

I play everything, but my favorite MMO experiences are the “deal tons of damage to heal” role. Best example of this was the first year of Rift with Inquisicar and Chloro. Both allowed for a great deal of room to help the group more than a usual player by letting the healer bring solid DPS and let you gear the same for caster DPS as healer, which makes gearing fun instead of an inventory nightmare.

Sadly neither of those are playable in their original, fun state. Inquisicar isn’t a viable spec anymore while chloro had its damage gutted and healing upped to compensate so now it just feels like a regular healer. The best part of the specs was being able to genuinely carry by bringing respectable DPS (and beating the actual DPS on meters was a hoot) while healing. Felt like a general, the heart of the group.

God I miss old Rift. Best macro system in any MMO, hands down.
