The Daily Grind: What MMO are you playing instead of going out right now?

Whether you’re practicing extreme social distancing or actually hunkered down within a quarantine zone, quite a lot of you are playing video games right now, as evidenced by the huge spikes on Steam this past weekend. While health workers and delivery people and grocery clerks risk their lives, many folks are recognizing that the best way they can help is get out of the way, not be a disease vector, and focus on something social – like gaming – to stop from freaking out.

I’ve seen people organizing events and even begging studios to launch games early so people can play and not go bonkers while they’re “sheltering in place” and subject to state curfews. In my house, I’ve been using games like Adventure Academy, too, to keep my kids pumped full of gamified knowledge while the schools are under a complete shut down.

What MMO are you playing instead of going out right now? And for the bonus, what MMO do you wish would release early so you could jump in while you have some downtime?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Well, Vendetta Online (natch). There has been more activity in game, on average, which is nice. I feel like I have my terrestrial MMO needs covered by Ryzom, so not really wishing for any more MMOs to launch. If you were to press me, I suppose, I’d have to say… Crowfall? Perhaps?

On the MMO front I’m sticking with Temtem, although I’ve dabbed into Haven & Hearth and Project Gordon a couple times. Also on PC, I’m playing LoL and Kingdom Come, while on Switch I’ve decided it’s finally time to play Mario + Rabbids and it’s actually really fun.

Beyond my usual Star Trek Online stuff, it’s been mostly strategic-type games.

I find that strategy games tend to require more of my focus and concentration than other games, which is good when I need a break from the dire epidemic news.

Luckily, the Federations DLC for Stellaris just released on Steam yesterday, so I’ve been testing that out

So far? I like it a lot, as it generally makes the game’s AI empire behavior more sensible, and it also gives you the means to address, or even to influence, the AI behavior as the live-player empire.

Also been playing a fair chunk of Phoenix Point from Julian Gollop — the man who created the original XCOM games.

Phoenix Point is effectively Gollop’s original XCOM version 2.0, with enough of the details altered to prevent lawsuits.

Honestly, I think I like Phoenix Point better than XCOM (original or remake) at this point.

It’s got an interesting setting and lore, and the gameplay and storytelling can get varied in ways you might not expect.

The core gameplay of a squad taking on alien nasties is still there, but there’s a lot of other cool stuff going on as well. Diplomacy. Exploration. Mystery-solving. Mr. Gollop and his crew really brought more than the basics, in my opinion.

Currently, Phoenix Point is exclusive to the underwhelming Epic Games Steam-alike storefront — but it will be available on both Steam and GOG in December 2020, when the Epic exclusivity deal expires.

Lastly, I’m playing the single-player rpg Pathfinder: Kingmaker when I’m in the mood for it.

As others have said, we really could have used some new MMORPG content to immerse ourselves in right about now, but most (if not all) of the MMORPGs I play, or have played, are only featuring content that I’ve seen already.

So, for distraction, it’s single-player games here.

Go safely, friends, please,

Been playing FFXIV while on Spring Break and all the while my college classes have moved online. I’ve been hanging out with people in Limsa and have been working on the current raid tier.

Been mostly playing FFXIV and grinding out and old relic just for glam. But I work from home as a software eng so not much has changed.

As a bonus I would love is PSO2 would come to PC early as I would play that.
