Warframe delayed Operation: Scarlet Spear’s PC release to this week

The best laid plans of mice, men, and Warframe developer Digital Extremes often go awry, and so it is with the latest update Operation: Scarlet Spear, which originally planned to release last week on PC but instead has confirmed a launch for this week instead.

The confirmation announcement also summarizes just what Operation: Scarlet Spear will involve for players of the action MMO. It all starts at the Scarlet Spear Flotilla, where players can join up in squads to either defend a beacon from waves of foes on the ground or infiltrate a Sentient Murex in the air via Railjack. Taking on these missions earn players Scarlet Credits, which can be spent on shinies like a brand-new weapon, an Operation-variant Lacera, Arcanes, and more. The update will also bring a Nova Atomica collection, Sentient decorations for your dojo, and a stylish new Tiamat Shawzin instrument.

A lot of people are going to want Arcanes after the big rework those got at the start of this month!

Given the upheaval that moving the whole studio to home working must’ve involved, I’m impressed the release has only been delayed one week.

I just hope they put something in place so that the missions are still functional when there’s way more people doing the ground mission than Railjack. It’s probably too much to hope for that the missions even slightly scale for playing solo. The ground mission might, barely, depending on what ‘frame someone is willing to take. The Railjack part sounds like it was deliberately designed to be impossible to solo, and probably impossible for most pick up groups. Since the ship will apparently be attacked by fighters and boarding parties during the away mission. (Meaning it will be damaged enough to fail the mission without at least one, possibly two people deciding to stay behind.)

I logged in, did the daily Sortie, and tried the event – 30m ground mission with a pretty good team, saw how much cred we got, saw how much of a grind it’d be to get any of the rewards, said “**** that” and logged out!

I don’t want to even think about what a nightmare it’d be to try and do either of the event missions solo.

At least it looks like they’re addressing some of the biggest problems asap?

But I’m completely gobsmacked that they’d balance the reward pricing around squads of veterans doing perfect full runs and apparently not even consider casual players with limited playtime ~sigh~

I *am* a veteran. I’m not a min/max player, but I’ve been around since the beginning. I can only assume they were testing with one or two teams in each side, playing Dev Godmode. I don’t *own* a weapon build that can damage the ground target after about wave 12. The scaling on enemies is still pretty broken, so I can’t *survive* past about wave 14. To get the full reward, you have to do 17 waves, facing level 180 eximus enemies.

The price to payout on the event items is frankly absurd. I’d be looking at almost 40 hours of doing a tedious slog in the ground missions to get the two weapons. That’s not counting the bonus for sticking with a single flotilla for the full three hours.

And the “bonus” credits just feel badly though out, even if they weren’t apparently buggy and broken. Your bonus is tied to the specific instance of the relay you join. Once you enter it you have to remain in that one instance until all 100 invading ships are driven back. Then you’re *supposed* to get a bonus of 2000, 6000, or 10000 event credits depending on how well you scored.

The problems here are many. First, it’s tied to that specific instance. If you crash (or in my case get randomly kicked to login because of a Windows bug that has affected a tiny number of systems since at least as far back as Windows 7) then you have to try to rejoin the same relay. Oh, too bad. It’s full. No bonus for you. Second, there’s apparently no matchmaking at all for the space mission. If there is matchmaking for the ground mission it’s unreliable at best. Third, the bonus rewards are just broken. People who topped the leaderboards are getting the minimum bonus, people who managed to solo a few waves of ground for a whole hundred or so credits are getting the 10,000 bonus. And lots of people aren’t getting one at all, even if they didn’t crash out.

Lastly, the “squad link.” I don’t know what I expected from it, but this has managed to fail to meet even my lowest expectations. If you are in the ground mission, you get constant messages as the boss is being scanned that “SoAndSo recieved your uplink.” But according to people trying to play the Railjack missions, they have gone ten or twenty minutes or more just standing there waiting without receiving one. Even when ground teams outnumber space teams by two to one or more.

And all of that to spend up to 40 hours to earn *two* new weapons, neither of which are apparently even close to worth it. One is a variant of an existing weapon, and the other is just “okay” at best.

I don’t know what’s going on at DE or who is in charge. But… *Jedi Wave* I think they need to take a break and rethink their life.
