Bless Unleashed’s latest trailer touts its combat over tab-target MMOs

You might have forgotten about Bless Unleashed’s recent launch, what with the world being aflame right now, but its launch, along with the release of PSO2’s beta, have been two of the best things console MMO players have had to look forward to all month. It’s been on the quiet side since its official release, but today, Bandai Namco and Neowiz – well, actually the press release doesn’t so much as mention Neowiz – dropped a new trailer centered on the game’s combo-based combat system.

“Combat is a key feature in Bless Unleashed, and with a unique combo system, players can dive deep into making their character unleash devastating attacks and powerful blessings,” the publisher writes. MMO fans, there’s a bit of shade in the video for you, as the narrator talks up Bless’ systems by… putting down the rest of the genre. “Designed specifically for console, combat is a richer and more immersive experience than a typical tab-targeting MMO,” the video says. Of course, even typical tab-targeting MMOs have had combo systems for decades, and most of the combos and special blessings will seem pretty familiar to players, whether they’re accustomed to the mouse and keyboard or more controller, but hey. Video.

Sorry you are too late – New World invented real-time combat already.

Sorry but the short clips of combat we have seen it doesnt look very promising. They have not showed any real gameplay, and the game is getting released very soon. That can’t be a good sign, they probably won’t show us because people will cancel preorders if they did. It’s a glorified survival mmo, and not anywhere near a true mmorpg. Maximum of 1000 players per server is also lame.. and for sure there will be servers that are not constantly at 1000 player peak which means some servers will be empty.

Action-MMO: As players level up, combos become more powerful.
Tab-target: as players level up, new skills open up.

Action-MMO: combos can also provide additional effects, such as a powerful movement debuffs on enemies.
Tab-target: new skill learned; snare.

Basically, nothing an action-MMO does cannot be done in tab-target MMOs, the latter just requiring single keystrokes. To me, action-combat translates into something I would have appreciated 20 years ago, back when I was a teen. Now, I prefer streamlined tactical combat. I don’t want to frantically press buttons after a hard day’s work, I don’t want 15 different animations in rapid-succession taxing my brain even further. I want to sit back and enjoy my gaming session, not end up all stressed out and overstimulated.

False on so many levels. Action Combat MMOs definitely have more outplay ability than tab target MMOs. Just having to aim alone. You can force targets to miss, positioning becomes way more important in an Action combat game than it does in a tab target. Things don’t auto-track.

I can appreciate you enjoy tab target more because of your own reasons, but that statement is definitely false.

Not every action-MMO has you aim and not every tab-target MMO has auto-lock.

Dont confuse soft targeting with action combat, to many people throw soft targeting games like ESO and GW2 into the action combat section and they are definitely not on the same level as TERA or some of the other true action combat games.

And yes tab target literally is auto-locking which is why you tab between targets.

is this console only?

if Bless Unleashed’s combo system is anything like regular Bless’ combo system, then I’d rather have pretty much any other system, tab target, action, whatever. That system was very rigid, boring to use and a huge step down in general because of how you went about unlocking the powers

Tab target mmos:
Tons of skills, takes time to learn your class. Good progression over the leveling course since you are acquiring new skills fairly often.

Action combat mmos:
Mostly very few skills that you can activate at all time. Skills are either huge AOE invisible telegraphs or single target skills that automatically seeks out the enemy.

I want an mmo with true aiming with the same amount of skills as you have in most tab target mmos. In my honest opinion most active action combat MMOs takes less skill than a fully fleshed out tab target mmo. Why ? Because the action mmos only require you to face the mobs and spamm the few skills you have.

At least in tab target MMOs you need to learn all your skills and rotations to be good. Most action MMOs are the same but with less skills.

Wildstar is the only good action combat MMO IMHO, because it had true aim of all skills, even healing.

It’s so funny that mmo companies brag about it not being tab target, but at the same time has less skills and lower skillcap than most tab target MMOs, and not even true aim! Bless online had the most horrid and brain dead combat system, I bet this is the same.

The issue with real true aim targeting is that a lot of abilities end up becoming AOE attacks or powers. PbAOE, Targeted AOE, Cone AoE, etc

Even healing.

They do this because its really not practical to have skills and attacks be real targeted in typical mmorpg gameplay. Maybe if the game played in First Person.

I think wildstar did this very good. If you shot a projectile the telegraph was very narrow, which forced you to aim and think about player movement. Literally every skill needed aiming. You also had many active skills in your rotation like a regular tab target MMO. But with games like ESO you don’t need to aim abilities since they automatically follow and hit the target, and the telegraphs are so large that its impossible to miss.

Tab target – WoW, Rift, SWTOR

hybrid/Soft-Target – ESO, GW2, Bless, BnS

Action Combat – TERA, BDO, Wildstar

To many people throw all those soft-target games into the true aim based action combat games section. They are leagues apart. TERA is probably the best implementation of action combat because it doesn’t utilize the LAS like Wildstar did. Meaning everything you listed about what is good in Tab Target is in TERA, but it also has everything that a really good action combat system has.

A very well done action combat system will always out perform a tab target game in terms of mechanics. Its not always preferred by people, because some people just cant deal with or keep up with an action combat game.

do you know of Rise of Agon? f2p nowadays, fairly active lately. it’s worth catching up on patch notes at least, if you already know much of it’s history.

do you know about Rise of Agon? it’s F2P and pretty active with the recent corontines (edit: corona + quarantine, for those who wouldn’t get it).

it’s %100 an MMOFPS, with tons of spells/abilities (TOO many IMO).
