Star Trek Online makes its lower-tier ships all available for purchase with dilithium

With the advent of scaling ships in Star Trek Online, the first four ship tiers in the game have become far less relevant. Sure, you could get a Tier 3 ship, possibly from the game’s cash shop… but why would you do that when you could just buy a top-tier ship that will scale along with you? The answer, it seems, is because you’ll be able to soon purchase these non-scaling ships with Dilithium, and at a substantial discount from their current prices.

Starting this week on PC and on April 9th for consoles, Tier 1 ships will cost 1000 Dilithium, Tier 2 will cost 2500, Tier 3 cost 5000, and Tier 4 cost 10,000 Dilithium. None of the ships at these tiers will require Zen to unlock, either, which means that you’ll have access to a greater variety of ships even leveling through the game as a new free player. The only drawback is that these ship unlocks will now be per-character rather than account-wide, but existing purchases will remain account-wide. So you do have a reason to not fly a scaling ship after all, it seems!

The other way to do it would be to update all ships to be able to scale to Tier 6.

I did purchase some of these old ships in the past for my characters when starting out. I guess I do feel the tiniest bit burned but overall am okay with it.

Yeah, I can see what you’re saying. It’s kinda like when they went from T-5 to T-6, but not as breaking. Everything still works as it did before, vs the change to T-6 made your T-5 ships effectively useless.

At this point, for most of the ships that you can buy as you’re leveling, there is already a T6 variant available. There are some exceptions, but for the most part, it was pointless for them to be charging people 500-2000 Zen for what was basically a skin for a scaling T6 ship.

I do approve using Dil over EC or some other currency, simply because Dil still has value. It can still be traded for Zen, so people are still ‘paying’ for something we paid for in the past.

Like you say, I’m mostly okay with it. It’s a generally positive move (and could have been worse).

In all honesty, this would have been my preference. And was indeed what I hoped they would do.
It wouldn’t have broken anything and would prevent some of the older ships from going obsolete.

People bought these lower tier ships to either unlock a ship skin that works on higher Tier ships or to complete a set, to answer you why would they do that

Yes. Although a lot of the older consoles are really showing their age. Most newer ones come with passive bonuses of some level – never as good as a dedicated console, but you’re not “wasting” a slot to complete a set for the bonus powers. But the older ones don’t mostly don’t do that. If the power is sort of useful it’s not too bad. But I have a few where the powers are meh or actually bad, but I want the full set bonus. (Like the improved saucer pets on the Galaxy and Odyssey cruisers.)

Oh well. Glad I got the ships as account unlocks while that was still a thing. I have 35 characters now, and anything I can’t easily unlock for all of them might as well not exist, as far as I’m concerned. :(

And Tier 5 ships which are also non scaling, what about those I wonder?

also as they will now be per character unlocks rather than account unlocks I wonder how that will affect the lower tier ships we may have previously bought that WERe account unlocks?

Logically they could put a flag depending if bought before a specific date – if they dont get lazy coding it

The game already had a dilithium based purchasing system for non-Zen ships, so all they really had to do was copy the Zen ships over to that system and tada. Shouldn’t affect the existing purchases.

The old purchased ones that were account unlocks are definitely staying account unlocked. They’re already marked as account unlocked for the people that bought them. Only the new cheap dilithium purchases will be affected as per character.

I do understand being worried a bit but these guys aren’t that stupid. Ubisoft, on the other hand, has screwed people over in games doing stuff like that. I wish Ubisoft didn’t keep having games I wanted to play because I hate them :P

I’m firm in my belief that these guys here know what they’re doing and wouldn’t make that mistake. It’s a very easy toggle to know if a ship is purchased per character or account. Each ship can be marked each way. So old purchasers here will be still good for having it marked for their account.
