DarkStory is a 2-D MMORPG that hearkens back to 16-bit era RPGs

I admit that my RPG gaming sensibilities are greatly informed by the SNES age of JRPGs. Games like Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana and Evermore, and of course, seminal classics like Chrono Trigger and the Final Fantasy series are ingrained into my soul. So if you’re anything like me, then the introduction to the MMORPG DarkStory might tickle your fancy.

DarkStory comes by way of developer BraveWolf and officially released last month. The game bills itself as a 2-D online role-playing game (ORPG) touting hundreds of hours of play on offer. Players can pick from one of four classic classes and do things like explore dungeons, party with friends, enter a PvP arena, and take up crafting and gathering professions. DarkStory is free-to-play with a cash shop that appears to have cosmetics and boost items.

If you’re curious about this one, the game is available to download now and is set to release on Steam sometime this month. You can also get a peek at some gameplay with the launch trailer below.

I can see why it’s not on Steam yet. The server seems to be chugging and stuttering with the people it has now.

Even if it was able to keep running as it is, with the current crazy rubberbanding that’s going on I don’t think Steam reviews would be that kind. Add all the new players Steam would bring to it and I don’t see the server performance under that new strain would be something most people would be willing to deal with.

I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt and guess this is from the new players the game is getting because of the new news coverage and not how it usually runs.

The game looks completely interesting and cool, but I can’t deal with the current rubberbanding (it’s seriously really bad). I’ll look back later one day soon and see if it’s under control.

*Note – The server performance just picked up and it is really fun when the server is performing well. I’ll keep checking back off and on to see if it was just a brief thing or is from new player strain or something else.

It could use a few quality of life updates but otherwise when it isn’t lagging much the game is pretty fun.

Happened to me twice this week – always bounces back in terms of server performance after time.

Been playing this for about a week now — I’m hooked. The in-game events, crafting system, and cosmetics are a blast.

Do you just press one button in combat?

For the main attack your class has, sure, the default key to attack is control. but there’s skills that are hotkeyed and a combo system for each class (Combos for Knights, Elements for Mages, etc)

OK, thanks!

I like simple combat in MMOs, but is this just pressing one button to attack?

No there are all sorts of skills, but it’s not like a game that has dodging and stuff either. You stand there and spam skills and pots basically :P Though of course, the ranged classes can kite things.

The game would be much better if the server wasn’t rubberbanding and such so bad right now. The lag is fairly high at the moment and it feels like it’s playing like a fast turn-based game rather than an action one. Maybe that’s the best way to describe it anyway. Four-way grid movement and such for movement.

I don’t mean to sound harsh, it looks cool and all and is a bit fun, I’m just grumpy because of the server performance right now. I’d be pretty into it if it was better.

There are a few classes that aren’t there yet which I’m interested in seeing (they don’t currently have a healer and I’m wondering if that is one of the coming ones). I could see this being a pretty fun multiplayer party game once the server issues are under control.

I’ll keep tabs on it but won’t spend money or do much until the server performance is better. I’ll check back off and on to make sure it wasn’t just a temporary issue I was thinking was how it always was too.

Also these days I really like to see secondary keys in command customization. Maybe I can find a place to go suggest that to them.

*Note – Server performance briefly picked up and it’s really fun when it’s not lagging :P
