Shroud of the Avatar disables a big experience boost to get rid of shared experience pools

There was a 10x quest experience bonus in Shroud of the Avatar, but it has been disabled now. But the reason is actually somewhat mundane and disappointing because it all ties back into other systems being exploited. Ages ago, shared XP pools for multiple characters were added by a developer who, according to the post on the matter, did so without being told to and without consulting with anyone. Once the feature was in, it was hard to remove or adjust.

This was all well and good for a while, but with 10x experience from quests, players were making new characters, doing several quick one-time quests, then deleting the new character, making a new one, and repeating the process. The feature has finally been tracked down and hopefully closed off to avoid these exploits in the future, with the exploiters who used this trick getting punished accordingly, but it will hopefully result in a better overall experience and ultimately will lead to the 10x buff being turned back on. Bit of a catastrophe leading up to that, though.

Chris doubles down today on that a rogue employee put in shared xp and he wasn’t aware of it. 29:50 mark of the video.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/580718615

And the video of him from last year stating that he not only knew about this change, but approved it (57:30-59:00) – keep in mind this video is from before the live release that introduced this change.

Keep being classy Chris!

Chris:

“Damm, I have used the unity-has-a-bug excuse eleven times this month , I gotta try something else or people might start getting suspicious…wait ,I’ll blame someone else, I only did that 3 times!”

Unity is very bug riddled, there are many beyond Catnip with issues. Problem with all games once you get in bed and develop fully on a platform only to find issues its hard to change over to something new so all you can do is hope that engine gets fixed or that you make enough money to remake the game on another eventually.

April 30/19: “It was a change I okayed.”
April 1/20: “This was a person on the team that kinda went rogue. Basically they were just doing things that they wanted to.”

He really just says whatever he needs to say in the moment, to deflect responsibility, doesn’t he?

Because of your comment, I made a thing.

Good thing you do this. Spears definitely reads the comments section here and has scrubbed videos in the past that have shown him to be lying.

Everyone else: If you would only stop lying we may start to believe you for once!

I find it funny how he blames a previous employee along with Unity for the issues these days. Fact is he has been in charge even when it was Portalarium. Yet somehow the pooled exp was a mistake that HE allowed to be put in AND stay in for all this time!

And rather than bite the hand that feeds you, he doesn’t ban the exploiters he only takes their exp away so that they can find another way to keep exploiting the system.

I guess these excesses go with Chinese New Years, won’t fit in the box, etc etc.

Negative he was not in charge when it was Port. He had a say in direction but approval on many thing was a group thing. Since Catnip took over he has more say now in direction ;)

Some of the replies on Spears’s forum post…people are angry and fed up with his transparent excuses. Even some of the game’s biggest bootlickers are very unhappy.

by a developer who, according to the post on the matter, did so without being told to and without consulting with anyone.

This is BS.

They specifically did that in release 65 as a quality-of-life improvement.

Quality of Life
Hot keyable toggle for tooltips for inventory: Added option to disable tooltips for inventory list, added key mapping to toggle option, defaults to “,” (comma).
Gold and Pooled Experience: These are now shared between characters on the same account.

This wasn’t something patched in before or after, it was shipped with the release, meaning, it was done internally first. If they were so opposed to it, they could have refreshed the player data on QA/internal.

No, they went out of their way to ship that change. It wasn’t sneaked in. Keep in mind that Starr was in the habit of posting a draft of this for public review, for a week or so before the patch goes live.

If I had zillions of hours I didn’t mind sparing, I’d go through their steams and probably pull clips of them talking about this upcoming change.

Chris Spears lied and made excuses, blaming others? Shocking!!!!11

It does make me wonder if the “former dev” he’s referring to is Starr himself.

I reject the idea that an employee decided on a whim, without telling anyone, to make a fundamental gameplay-altering change like that. Maybe this person erroneously got it into his head that he was supposed to do this. That happens.

But at the end of the day, the leadership knew about this. The leadership knew for quite awhile, and did not have to commit that change to production.

Instead, the leadership made a *command decision* to commit this change. The responsibility is theirs.

The only question is whether this was before or after Chris decided to lie to the world for months about who that leadership was.

I reject literally everything Spears says unless there’s outside corroboration. He’s proven himself, over and over, to be in an estranged relationship with the truth.

Per the youtube video above, apparently Lord Subtleton is the former dev he is throwing under the bus for a “change made without telling anyone”, except for the part Chris forgot, that he approved the change and blabbed about it on stream.

Best in the business folks.

Chris busted, again – starting at about 57:30 to about 59:00 –

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz6zH8itaw0

“It wasn’t a change that I made, but it is a change that I okayed”. -Chris, who is saying this was done without his knowledge.

Liars continue to lie, water continues to be wet.

Hats off for being able to find these things.

My impression is that Lord Subtleton was granted some level of autonomy for making changes, even setting aside the “I okayed it” part. That wouldn’t be unusual for them, given how much Chris has been hands-off for things like quests and crafting.

So basically, still a leadership-level decision for what powers to grant to the staff. You don’t give dev XYZ leadership powers over a jurisdiction then throw them under the bus when they do just that. “I let them decide things and then they decided things! WTF”

The “team” part is very conditional.

No matter what Chris says, i’m highly sure Starr is just so damn happy to be done with this dumpster fire that he probably ain’t even mad.

Reader
bparry

It was added just before release of R65, and if you watch the telethon as well many after he was never a fan of it. There was even some comments on it between him and Starr etc. it was pushed in and he had to accept that. now that Catnip is his company he has more say in things and has been drastically changing things to bring it more inline with what players are requesting / wishing. no different then any political stance where the majority vote for something you dont want but you have to publicly go with it even if you voted against.

Again, why is MOP covering a game with under 90 Steam players and a total pop that probably barely scratches the thousand?

I am still hoping MOP does something with the fate of the Seedinvest (cough, Catnip ignoring and avoiding it just like Portalarium did), and then calling it a day on SotA coverage.

But honestly, they cover it because the people (person) leading the game just keeps falling on his face. Rubbernecking while looking at a car crash is hard to stop doing.

One of the Massively articles back in February was seeking investors from Seedinvest to talk to. I imagine Bree and co. are working on something still, but it’s probably going to take a while…

Especially since, in the Reddit post made to solicit information, they are also reaching out to both Seedinvest as well as Catnip for commentary as well… but knowing Spears aversion to truth or owning up to anything? They’ll only get as much from him that Seedinvest did.

Which is to say, nothing.

Because shitting on SoTA is fun.

Why are you bothered that they cover it?

You can just pass the articles.

And whatever you think of SotA, news is news.

With the state of the MMORPG genre, it’s not like they have a lot to choose from. This isn’t 2006.

Why should the amount of players a game has determine if it gets covered or not?

Deadly Habit

By exploiters dealt with, you mean just remove the ill gotten XP, but don’t ban and delete their accounts and alts associated with them along with naming and shaming them publicly like most studios would?

They could lose some potential whales if it was one of them doing the “exploiting” otherwise!

Also when a game has as many half baked and implemented systems and features that go live without QA testing as SotA does, is it really exploiting or just noticing bugs and poor design due to the magnified XP gain?
