The Daily Grind: Where do you want to explore in your MMO but can’t?

Every time I’m in an MMORPG, my eyes are always looking to the horizon. What’s out there, over that next mountain range, across that vast open sea, through that dense forest? That desire to explore has always been strong, and I appreciate games that encourage this wanderlust rather than restrict it.

Of course, very few MMORPGs have fully fleshed-out worlds with no boundaries or invisible walls. Sometimes we hit those impassable cliffs or find ourselves floundering in the ocean at the edge of our ability to continue. While we know that there’s probably nothing but developer gray space beyond, it’s hard not to want to see where you can’t.

Where do you want to explore in your MMO but currently cannot? Are there regions or zones that are denied to you that you wish were finished and open for business?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Inside the buildings of Kaineng City in Guild Wars. Here’s hoping GW2’s Cantha gives us the chance!

Every where I run into a glass wall.
“I made it this far, why can’t I walk across this plateau? I cannot understand why you block me. Why must your glass walls interfere with my exploratory fun?”

Sure, I understand if it’s a map edge but often, it just seems arbitrary.

And building with a door I can’t open in any MMO. I always think about what could be.

In FFXIV I just want to jump in the water in some places. The on-rails environments can be really annoying at times.

Where do I want to explore? Everywhere, in a huge vast VR world filled with areas which offer everything to everyone ;-)

Sadly this dream is very far away from reality due to extremely lazy and greedy developers who are afraid to push boundaries and instead prefer to create “yet another generic MMO with grinding of dumb AI monsters for worthless virtual items inside a tiny, ugly game world”, and sad old people still allow this to happen by willing to pay for those archaic creations ;-)

Cantha in GW2, and I can finally say that without being ultimately sad. :D
