The Daily Grind: What dead MMOs are you missing while under quarantine?

MOP reader Tyler wrote us a few weeks ago, pining for lost games during this time when so many people are under pandemic lockdown.

“I find myself missing Marvel Heroes,” he laments. “It was an easy drop in, drop out, colorful, generally positive, and energetically fun game. I miss it quite a lot during this strange time. It’s really weird as it’s not my normal genre staple. If someone is hiding self server setups or rogue servers, now is your time! Please?”

So let’s put it to you folks: What dead MMOs are you missing while under quarantine? What MMORPG really, really needs resurrection in the form of an emulator right now?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Asheron’s Call. I wouldn’t mind revisiting it right now, if it were still online. A unique one in many ways.

The MMO that I’ll miss the most will always be Firefall

Marvel Heroes as it’s the only one I played that has no emulator. Even if it did, I’d be far less satisfied playing the emulator over an official version, especially when compared to other emulators.

Well, Also Herowarz. I really liked that game for some reason.

I’ve played emulators for SWG, Warhammer Online, City of Heroes, and Fusionfall recently. I’ve also heard that Pirates of the Caribbean Online and Vanguard Saga of Heroes have emulators as well but I have yet to try those.

+1 to Marvel Heroes, as well as City of Heroes.

The first was just kind of fun to play on and off. Nightcrawler before his teleport nerf was also hella fun to play (just decent afterwards) :)

City of Heroes i don’t know whether to count. It’s back, sort of, but also not really. Most of the people i played with already quit a while ago. It doesn’t really feel like it did before, somehow.

Glitch, Free Realms, LEGO Universe. Something casual and fun to keep my mind of the outside world for a while.

Glitch would be a soothing balm for these troubled times.

RIFT is basically dead in spirit so I’ll go with that.

Yeah, seriously. Either Rift at launch or just the first expansion (but definitely before the F2P conversion).

Yeah, that was basically when the game was at its peak. Though Storm Legion did start making things more grindy and gave less rewards for things like collecting artifact sets, plus introduced the in-game cash shop as a foot in the door for the inevitable F2P conversion.

Really a shame that Trion’s over ambitiousness led to reckless/rushed development on their other games which eventually dragged RIFT down into the F2P swamp.

Wildstar, because other than the cupcake nonesense it was full of space cowboy sillyness that often lifted my mood.
