The Daily Grind: Which MMORPG boasts the best animal husbandry or taming system?

Last week, we wrote about Project Gorgon’s animal husbandry system thanks to a tip from MOP reader Dalton, and I have to say I was super impressed.

See, when I started MMOs way back in the day, “animal taming” was basically down to finding a pet, clicking a button to tame it, and doing your best to heal and feed it while it destroyed your enemies. It wasn’t until Star Wars Galaxies came along that pet and taming systems in MMOs truly evolved into bio-engineering and breeding mechanics, minigames in their own right. To date, the best breeding system I’d seen in an MMO was an addon to the SWG NGE period, the Beastmaster tree, which involves piles of resources and multiple crafters and special ingredients and days of incubating and configuring future pets in tanks to have just the right stats. And lucky rolls for mutations too! (That pic up above is my own [dormant] lab in SWG Legends.)

Project Gorgon’s new system sounds an awful lot like SWG’s, complete with genetics simulation and appearance mutations. It’s so much more than just a point-and-click taming system from the MMOs of yore, and yet it all feeds into the same type of gameplay.

Which MMORPG would you say boasts the best animal husbandry or taming system?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I’m kinda excited for this system to arrive on PG actually and I’m not even sure that it won’t be a total disaster (it’s a huge possibility because of the scope). It’s one of the best MMO out there rn and keeps getting better.

It’s BDO. Seriously. You can become a horse breeder for “reals”. As Aktouros mentions, there are some cash shop shenanigans, but it still comes back to what you know and learn about breeding horses.

And there are plenty of players that don’t want to learn all of the ins and outs. (Heh I could make a joke here but I will pass.) They just want a horse and you can sell it to them. A “normal” horse is prized. But a bad ass horse? Holy shit, it is a gold mine!

That’s child’s play compared to pre-cu SWG lol

BDO is pretty in depth with dozens of horses and types with varying stats, horse skills and multiple tiers of horse. There’s even a specialty tier of horse you get from upgrading perfect (courser) horses up to it. All of this is worth a lot of money too as you can turn in bad horses into tokens and exchange tokens for valuable rewards. That specialty horse level is worth huge amounts of money as well. There’s even color theory of what color your horses are will determine what pool of potential color/patterns you get.

The only downside is that there’s a lot of potential for cash shop influence as you can reroll skills (to make a courser) and that’s what most people end up having to do to bypass the RNG in the system.

I gotta go with pre-cu swg here. It was incredibly interactive where you could capture beasts, you could extract dna and do genetics , even controlling what stats are developed.

This was creature handler, there was something similar for droids (droid engineer).

This is way out of my element, isn’t half of Pokemon Go basically about this whole concept of taming.training/raising pets?

Definitely BDO, no competition there. Taming in the wild, training, breeding, selling.
