Amazon Game Studios’ PvPvE shooter Crucible launches May 20 — here’s a video outlining its modes

Gun or run.

Most of the news regarding Amazon’s online multiplayer shooter Crucible has been kind of thin. We know that it’s made some pretty big business moves, that it wants to blend PvE and battle royale elements, and that it was eyeing this month for its launch window. Now that launch window has transformed into a launch date: Wednesday, May 20th, along with a new informational video that breaks down its three gameplay modes.

The first mode is Heart of the Hives, which pits two teams of four against one another to kill immense creatures and gather their hearts as fast as possible. The Alpha Hunters mode pits eight teams of two against one another in a battle royale match. Finally, Harvester Command tasks two teams of eight with keeping control of Essence Harvesters and collecting the most Essence in a point control mode. Players will be able to select from 10 different characters that level up when Essence is collected, unlocking new abilities, more power, and more health.

Crucible will launch free-to-play on Steam, though the link to its Steam page isn’t currently working at the time of this writing. All the same, you can at least get a glimpse of what this shooter is offering in the video below.

It’s free to play, so I’ll give it a try. But I’m not expecting to get more than an hour or two out of it.

Reminds me of that old Jack in the Box Ultimate Cheeseburger focus group commercial (which, I can’t seem to dig up):

Participant A: “You get rid of the bun, then you’d have something.”
Participant B: “Word.”

You get rid of the ‘P’, then you’d have something. :)

16 players max? Is that the best Amazon could do with their AWS cloud servers? LOL.

Anyway, I am willing to bet $1000 that this game will be very popular with streamers and players for a couple of weeks during the official release then its popularity will start to drop down and in a few months most players will abandon this and play something else regardless of what Amazon will do with it in future. This game does not bring anything new to small team FPS games and cannot touch any FPS games with larger team sizes.

Yeah. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Apex Legends has a big update on May 12th and this comes out on May 20th. Apex S5 will have to be really good to push Valorant out of that space and then hold onto it when Crucible rolls out.

I see some developer was a big fan of Destiny 2 and basically yanked out Gambit and then called it Crucible.

Why wait when you can play Monster Hunter World or Anthem?

Nothing wrong with the PvPvE idea, there’s The Cycle on the Epic store that’s doing it too. Heck, Massively’s ads are also broadcasting about Population Zero (which at least sounds a bit innovative in that it stretches out each game round for one week before resetting.) All these games are going after the FPS-Battle Royale crowd.

It’s one crowded market to launch into though. The demand for new maps, new characters, new stuff will be super high and the players are likely to locust onto the next FPS that comes out.

Screw Amazon and all, but it looks like it could be fun. I like control point capturing in my FPS games. Y’all are worse than usual in these comments today lol

Was just about to say this.

It looks decent, nothing crazy buts its F2P and looks like its worth a shot.
PvPvE can be alot of fun. I had some great times in the original division in the darkzone.

The hate this is getting here is crazy.
People will hate on literally anything it blows my mind.

Wait, so people are not allowed to express their dislike, especially for games which do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING better in terms of gameplay compared to many existing games and do some things worse (such as only 8 or less people per team, which something that many people dislike, including me)? If you want this kind of “echo chamber” – I would suggest you to visit game-specific subreddits instead of sites which cover variety of games.

I’m looking for where anyone said people aren’t *allowed* to express their dislike. Are you sure they’re the ones who should find an echo chamber?

I mean, I’ll try it if I can GFN stream it. I won’t care about it, but I’ll try it.
