Gaming-focused chat platform Guilded secures $7 million in funding

Yep, another chat platform is seeking to take Discord’s crown, but in the case of Guilded, it’s doing so with what it purports to be a variety of tools specifically for gamers and with the help of a fresh injection of revenue.

Guilded has secured $7 million in Series A funding thanks to Matrix Partners and a number of other venture capital firms. As part of the funding agreement, Matrix Partners general partner Ilya Sukhar will sit on the Board of Directors for Guilded. What this funding ultimately means for the platform is the promise of team expansion, additional features for the program itself, as well as “strategic partnerships” with game publishers and developers and esports orgs.

As for the program itself, Guilded already provides a number of features that might be of interest to gamers, with the ability to create events, group calendars, and docs within the program, along with chat threads and “better” voice and video chat. In June, Guilded will also get a Tournaments feature to organize tournaments within the app. For those who are curious, Guilded is available via web browsers, mobile apps, and as its own Windows 10 app.

Organizational tools are nice and all but combining google docs and calendar with Discord isn’t an incentive enough in of itself to switch off Discord.

Meh. Discord does all necessary things already. All the junk like shared calendar can be done in different ways like Google Calendar.

Why do you need a calculator on my phone? I could literally just use an actual calculator.

However, i do agree that unless there is some groundbreaking innovation that Guilded is putting forward, they’re not gonna be able to capture a significant percentage of the market.

Oh gosh it really even looks like a Discord clone just looking at their webpage lol.

Just bring back Xfire, a clunky but lovable mess.

It’s probably too late. Discord is too powerful right now to have any sort of competition.

I can’t really say I was ever really impressed with Guilded. It seemed like a more invasive version of Discord with message boards attached and the server owners get to spam you with events.

Just another thing to sign up an account for that might get compromised someday and requests write access to all my social media.

Interesting. I was pretty much ready to dismiss this product until I read some of the features targeted to actual guilds. A good Calendar is something I think Discord should have added years ago, and the fact they never did shows a degree of complacency that I have not been happy with.

So, will see if service catches on, and what the quality is. Needs to be pretty darn close to 100% uptime for it to be of any use to gamers.

I guess this is good? Maybe?

I won’t use voice chat, and I don’t use any of the more popular options that already exist (like Discord.) Which doesn’t mean anything really, since I’m obviously not the target audience for this.
