New pictures hint at the potential look of Final Fantasy XI’s mobile version

Remember ages ago, when we first heard about Final Fantasy XI getting a mobile version in collaboration with Nexon? Remember how we’ve barely heard anything about it since then? It’s not just you, that project has been quiet for a very long time. But there is at least a hint of light at the end of the tunnel with the arrival of a new set of screenshots that certainly appear to be area textures and maps along with concept art.

The images are supposedly taken from a portfolio page that now produces a 404 error, and they show off some familiar zones (Windurst, La Theine Plateau, Gustaberg, and Sarutabaruta) along with concept art regarding several environmental designs. It’s not sure if this is legitimate art or just early concept work; either way, it sure does look nice, especially if you recognize these zones from the original game and are eager to revisit them once more.

I really hope Nexon releases this game on subscription and without a cash shop. This has potential, don’t screw it up.

You’d have better luck hoping for world peace.

(There may be a sub, but it’d be optional and of the ‘VIP’ nature.)

I’m pretty sure we’ll be on some sort of rail or an autoplay will water it down. Just look at what’s occurring with the other major open world MMOs and the trends they’re following. I really think that people have such fond memories of stuff like crafting sliced sardines with a wind crystal in a moody little corner of Windurst while talking to their LS buddies, that they can’t imagine that present mobile MMO trends could lead to a product that presents them with a feature-light, high definition mockery of their beloved game.

If I had to choose between that and a generic feature-light, high definition mockery of the the MMO genre in general based in some new IP with barely any narrative that exists solely to sell you things in it’s cash shop, I’ll take the mockery of my beloved game. At the very least, you have the excellent narrative, a fantastic IP, and nearly 2 decades of content to use. It can still be bad but I’ll be optimistic until I see otherwise, seeing as how it’s free to do so.

God they look so good. Please let there be a non-mobile version. Please, Square.

With Squares track record for F2P games on mobile I fully expect there to be an energy bar, timers for crafting, and some sort of P2W lootbox system where the currency costs like $10 for one draw.
Oh and a subscription on top of all that.

It’ll look great though!

Wait, there are mobile games that aren’t like that?!

Those screenshots are actually looking pretty good. I never had a chance to check out XI, but depending on the monetization model that the mobile game will have, i think i’m gonna check it out.
