Rumor: Diablo II is getting a remaster at the end of the year

And this time, Blizzard will be only the publisher

While many fans are perhaps looking to Diablo IV to save the franchise (aka rehash Diablo II), there are some rumors stirring that Blizzard will… well… straight-up remake Diablo II, at least if anonymous sources are correct.

French games site Actugaming has recently learned that Blizzard is working on Diablo II Resurrected. This remaster is being developed by Vicarious Visions, the same team behind the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy remaster, so at least it’s in competent remaster hands unlike Blizzard’s last attempt at video game necromancy.

Reportedly, the remastered Diablo II will be among the announcements made at the inaugural Summer Game Fest and should be released at some point near the end of the year. We should mention that this same reporter for Actugaming also confirmed the release of Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 before their official announcements, though as always, one should take rumors with a grain of salt.

I’d like to point out that the D2 remaster was all but confirmed for last year as well. By the time the reveal date rolled around, crickets. Not even a teaser or vague foreshadowing. Nothing. I get wanting to report on rumors, but this rumor has been around for years and years and nothing has ever come of it. I’m not saying it won’t happen this time, but you know, Boy…..Wolf…..

Hard to really be excited or have any faith that they won’t botch it horribly if it is true. Warcraft 3 Reforged wasn’t as bad as people paint it out to be (as usual Internet outrage tends to be hyperbolic in nature) but it was definitely a mess and still doesn’t let you play custom campaigns yet.

After what happened to Warcraft 3, well who knows D2 didn’t have a Modding seen did it (if so then kiss that good bye).

I’m not sure I see the point, it’s going to come up short in everyone’s expectations and you can play it now in Grim Dawn.

At this point I’m not sure I want it. I mean, between Blizzard’s recent incompetence, the utter contempt they are showing to the modding community, and their push to make everything online-centric, there’s a good chance I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it even a fraction of how much I currently enjoy classic D2 anyway.

Acti-Blizz should just be honest with the goal here. They can call it “Diablo 2 Re-monetized.”

Sure as opposed to all the other game developers out there whose purposes are purely altruistic and focused solely on expanding the art and donating all proceeds to finding good homes to puppies and kittens.

John Carmack’s collection of Ferraris was a gift from his mom, right?

News flash: making money is the goal of every major gaming studio ever.

Of course not. There are, however, those who actively focus on the money in an aggressive manner (which includes by and large modern blizz in most cases) and those who produce a solid product and ask that you buy it if you want to play.

The first I will avoid like the plague. They could produce a good game, but they will dig into my wallet if I let them. The second I will support with respect for the respect shown. I might not like all their games, but if I can trust them to be about making something worth the asking price I’ll be watching for games I do want from them.

In short, where making money is the goal, respect is what allows any studio to earn my purchase.

I can name 2 Studios right off the top of my head with fair monetization, Crate and CDProjectRed.

I can name a bunch more. Some of them Indie, and some of them AA. What I can’t name there by and large are AAA studios, where fair practices in monetization seem anathema.

So, given the reporters track record, it is likely D2 remaster will appear on the radar, and yes maybe even as early as this year.

But I think most of you will agree that isn’t really the concern. The concern is: How will they screw it up this time?

I can’t help it. The Warcraft III remaster was such a crushing disappointment for so many reasons, that I have to wonder if Blizz is capable of a remaster.

How sad is it that suddenly that is what I’ve come to expect from Blizz, incompetence.

Please, Blizzard, please please please don’t screw this up. Pretty please.

At this point it’s hard to see how they won’t screw it up considering it seems that most of their creative talent has left the company some time ago.

Oh dear.

Hope they just keep it to remastering the graphics and not doing what they did to piss so many people off with Warcraft 3

If it’s anything like the Starcraft 1 remaster, it will be ideal.

I had a lot of fun with Diablo 2 back in the day so I’ve been waiting and hoping for this to come around. Hopefully it’s done well and doesn’t replace the original version which people have understandably suggested keeping files of in case Blizzard pulls another WC3 remake disaster.

I’ve been playing off a backup for years now.
