The Daily Grind: If you had your way, what one MMO patch in history would you roll back?

Rollbacks are in the news lately, and not for great reasons – some Guild Wars 2 players did indeed lose hours of time played this week, even though compensation’s now been pushed out. In the downtime hubbub, I saw an amazing thread on the GW2 subreddit about a rollback people actually did want: a rollback to classic Lion’s Arch.

That’s never going to happen, but I miss the old version too – a lot. I miss a lot of old versions of things. I wish Ultima Online would roll back to before Magincia was destroyed for the same reasons – or maybe just before the Age of Shadows patch. I wish we could roll back Star Wars Galaxies so the NGE never happened (but we got all the post-NGE content anyway). I wish we could roll back WoW to before Cataclysm and see what other directions Blizzard might have gone.

So let’s talk about the rollbacks we do want. If you had your way, what one MMO patch in history would you roll back?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

As so many other said, Cataclysm.
Something not mentioned yet could be: Diablo3 when they made personalized class loot and removed auction hall. (I hated the rmt auction hall, but I only played hc, and hc did not have rmt)

Also back in the day there was a patch in eq that removed the ability to cast buffs and group buffs without a target. It worked like if you had no target you would cast on yourself… The times I cursed at that change…

I could mention a bunch of Warframe patches I didn’t like as well. Kuva liches, most of Eidolon..

Oh I have a few.

The most recent is the 11 April 2019 patch for STO that removed the Foundry. It was why I played that game. Cryptic can’t write for shit, but a lot of the UGC missions were really damned good, like the Purity, Omnitabula, and SSF series. I basically quit after it because I had no desire to play braindead STFs (I guess TFOs now) over and over again for no reason.

Cataclysm would be next, but my reason for wanting it reverted is kind of selfish and very much a product of the time in my life it rolled out during. It happened right as I got out of the Army and went home to try to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I had been planning on a career in the Army, I was supposed to go to Drill Sergeant school after the deployment I was on and then to work at Fort Jackson for my required instructor detail as a Drill Sergeant for half of an enlistment term and then go to Warrant Officer Candidate School for 352P or 352S. I got hurt overseas fairly severely, so it didn’t happen. I was a mess physically and mentally, in a lot of pain, and I really wanted something, anything, to be a link to where things were when I had left, so it didn’t help that like everything was completely fucking different. It pissed me off and I quit, never came back either. I’m tempted to play WoW classic but I’m a very different person than who I was then.

After that it would be SWG’s NGE, it’s flogging a dead horse to enumerate why, it’s been said by far better writers than myself, so I’ll leave it at that. It’s still an instructive lesson of how you can ruin a very good game and kill a community in a single move. Up until then I had figured it would take a death by a thousand cuts to kill a very good MMO with an almost unbeatable license and that a single stupid move couldn’t possibly do it, but SOE proved me very wrong.

Cataclysm period, ruined that world. Ashenvale the best zone in the game was ruined.

The one that gave Dervishes adrenaline in GW1. It took me years to finally settle on a “main” in that game. I ended up doing a lot of research into the skills, and ended up putting together custom build that was able to do a few different game modes with relative ease. The only other times I’ve put in that much work into a custom build was my AB Permaburn Permableed Ranger/E and an AOE build for Rogue Marvel Heroes. Anyway, the adrenaline patch happened and it killed all my builds. Killed them dead because they were heavily rotation based, using the right skills at exactly the right time, and now I can’t do that because most of my offensive skills used adrenaline and were no longer available when I needed them to be available. I was not happy, not at all.

The Raid Finder patch in WoW. There were other problems before it, but this was definitely the point where I really lost interest in the game and was the beginning of the end for me.

For what reason? If you want challenging raids in static group – its still there in form of Mythic raids and rewards are much better there. You are basically being selfish for not allowing people who cant find static raid to see content.

There are way too many people who think spamming “1dd lfg” for 4 hours in chat somehow “builds a community” and “forms personal connections”.

Whichever update added the first part of Incarnate Trials to City of Heroes. The Incarnate system is what killed CoH for me. Forced teaming, “raids,” and the beginnings of “oh, you don’t have X level of Incarnate powers? Shove off, loser.” NCSoft closing the studio was just putting a bullet in the twitching corpse.

After all the people below roll WoW back to pre-cata, Id roll everything back to current state.

Must be cool to be part of the minority.

He probably started playing during or immediately before Cat came out. A lot of people who started then will say the same thing. It’s definitely a minority opinion with people like me (and probably you) who started during Vanilla, Burning Crusade or Lich King but there’s a sizable amount of people who started during Cat and have no frame of reference for how things were previously and just how jarring it was to people who’d been playing a while.

I played WoW since early beta and played pretty much 24/7 whole vanilla/TBC era.
Honestly, quests and zones design in vanilla are garbage compared to modern WoW

TBC and everything after it.

There actually are pre-NGE (and pre-CU) SWGemu servers which do add in some later game content (not JTL though).

Like a lot of people roll back Cata in WoW for the talent trees and fun pre pruned classes.
In the same vein SWTOR roll it back to patch 1.12 or Rise of the Hutt cartel, before they followed similar mistakes that WoW made in some regards with classes like removing talent trees. Before they ninja removed west coast servers and all the other dumb choices they made to push players away like GCC ect.

I loved both of these games before they followed these paths of pruning abilities, removing talent trees and among other poor choices.
