Path of Exile is trying its darndest to get a content update out in June

Usually here at Massively OP we tend to mock announcements about announcements, but in the case of Path of Exile, we are willing to give it a pass due to (a) Grinding Gear already tweaking its own nose and (b) the studio’s earnest desire to keep communication flowing between the developer and the playerbase.

In this case, the “tentative announcement about the announcement” concerns Path of Exile’s next content update, which the studio says should come at some point in June.

The studio said that working from home has slowed development somewhat, causing a delay and possibly triggering another one if the job can’t get done in time. What we do know is that, one way or another, the patch’s launch date will be firmed up by June 2nd, although Grinding Gear said that it is trying to target June 19th on the PC and the 24th for console.

“The pandemic has made safely predicting the release date of this league very difficult. There’s currently a reasonable possibility that the expansion will be delayed by an additional week and a low chance that it will be delayed further beyond that,” the studio explained.

Really hoping it pushes back a month and pushes their whole release schedule back so that they’re not launching a new league in December anymore.

I’m not optimistic that the new league will slow things down and make some more tanky melee builds viable, but I’ll check it out. Fell off this league hard after the first month or so and haven’t been back since. Really, really hoping that PoE 2 with all the new ability flexibility with multiple 6L skills will let them slow the game down and create more room for build and play diversity beyond “MELT THE SCREEN WHILE GOING FAST!”, with the only real way to counter players being via one-shots and an insane on-death cast spam.

These leagues feel like the game is put on life support to me. I enjoyed it for a few hours, never got past Act 3, but judging by the Steam Charts/ SteamDB, the playerbase is usually pretty low and when a new update launches, probably with a league, hundreds of thousands of people immediately jump in, only to start leaving soon after. It’s not a bad game by any means, but I think the replay value is somewhat lower than what Diablo 2 used to have back in the day.

It’s got infinitely more than D2 back in the day, I’ve played both hardcore and farming Baal/Meph/Diablo/other A5 guy or cow levels primarily for XP and maybe some good unique/rune drops doesn’t hold a candle to the mapping/delving/bossing endgame in PoE and the kind of crafting you can do.

This is the natural cycle for the game, and it’s something that GGG has sorta intentionally aimed for (Chris Wilson has spoken extensively about how GGG’s wildly inconsistent leagues had poor performance and how this current regular schedule has created a very predictable and sustainable burst in players) – They know they’ll get a big boost at launch and it will taper off by the end of the league when folks have had their fill. Then they’ll be back for the next league and the cycle repeats.

It’s not on “life support”, and more goes into every one of these leagues than does any D3 season (both being free updates). It’s very much alive and well, even as the “Sequel-spansion” is in development and should be out by sometime in 2021.

I don’t consider Diablo 3 as a game, let alone a action dungeon crawler, let alone a sequel to Diablo 1 and 2. The game is a massive joke aimed at Diablo fans. Blizzard don’t care anymore about anything, so why should I?

Even though I don’t see much value in Path of Exile, I would still direct anyone on the fence between PoE and D3 to PoE, it’s definitely a better game. Feels more dark like Diablo games and offers more value for free.

But I still can’t be bothered to play PoE anymore. I just don’t see the drive anymore. But on the other hand, I would love to install Diablo 2 and run through Act 2 and Lut Gholein, probably my favorite part of the game.

Maybe before MMOs when I was playing Diablo 2 full time, I would have loved the prospect of PoE where the game never feels like it really ends and overall the gameplay would be fine with me, but I grew out of those action dungeon crawlers and went to play MMOs so I can’t really enjoy them anymore.
