League of Legends esports matches will now have ads on the battlefield

At long last, Riot Games is going to bring the most desired part of professional sports to the esports events of League of Legends by introducing advertising to the matches! Yes, starting with next month’s Summer Split matches, viewers can expect to see banners enticing them to crack open a cold brew from Mastercard or enjoy the flavor of chicken wings from Alienware. (Or whatever goods those companies sell, we forget sometimes.) Advertising makes money!

Fortunately (or not), these ads will not be visible to players within the match, only to people viewing the match, as this will apparently minimize any distractions for players on the actual field. So if the part that had left you always feeling as if esports might not be like traditional sports was the fact that the walls aren’t plastered with advertisements, the good news is that now you’ll be able to get just that when you watch the match.

Darn. I can’t wail and gnash my teeth and threaten to boycott over this. Mostly because I can’t watch less than “zero minutes ever,” which is how much eSports I’ve viewed up to now.

This is the first digital product we’re announcing ahead of the Summer Split that’s designed to build a richer viewing experience around esports. Our aspiration is to create an environment that exudes the energy found in traditional sports, and we’ll continue to work towards that goal.

How can any human being write marketing garbage like this and feel good about themselves.

Why is this being announced to their players like a new feature? Yeah, this should be in the game, but announcing it like that is dumb.

If they really want to exude the energy of real sports, they need to get the mafia involved. It’s not a real sport until the mafia is paying someone a million dollars to throw the match.

They also need to get more drug abuse and domestic violence going on. That’s a thing in real sports too, right? Oh, and traumatic head injuries! They should include more of those, too! It’s not a real sport of someone isn’t getting a concussion.

Gross.

Ah, yes. Nothing like the outdoor ads for Mastercard and Taco Bell to color the scenery of my ADC getting farmed and calling everyone racial slurs in a game that is maintained by a company that has a history of harassment in it’s midst.

Capitalism.

Ads were around there anyway, doesn’t sound like a huge change. Now they can be on the actual map itself.

I find this hilarious.
