Take a peek at the draft mode for Artifact 2.0

There’s a draft mode in Artifact’s 2.0 relaunch/reboot, and it is a different spin on the concept of building a deck, that much is certain. Players select from a pool of available heroes in a usual draft format, but then the main deck of cards is built automatically based on the heroes both players have wound up with from the draft. The result is a deck that’s ever-changing but can be assembled relatively quickly, which sits well with the game’s lower emphasis on individually complex cards and more on mechanical interactions.

This is in sharp contrast to the original version of Artifact, which focused much more on mechanical density for individual cards and failing so hard that the game required a wholesale reboot/relaunch. (The fact that the game was buy-to-play with no chance to earn any cards through play did nothing to help it here.) Said reboot was announced back in March, so it remains to be seen if the second try is the charm or not.

I think Artifact was always way too late to the digital CCG party to get most people’s attention beyond making them say “lol Hearthstone came out in 2014 wtf is this card game”. Hell, Elder Scrolls Legends was way too late to compete with HS.

Artifact was different from the competition which was an additional barrier to entry, but I hope with a not-terrible business model that we will give the game mechanics a proper look.

As a Magic the Gathering junkie, I don’t really get this game.

It really doesn’t seem to bring anything worth leaving Magic.

I think you would agree that just because MTG and MTG Arena exist doesn’t mean people shouldn’t try to make new CCG’s. Most of the games we got after Hearthstone were Hearthstone with a few tweaked mechanics. Hearthstone was always Blizzard’s friendlier MTG. All the popular digital CCGs are just MTG imitators that are basically worthless (to me) now that WotC figured out how to make a good PC game out of Magic.

Artifact doesn’t feel like MTG with a twist (imo of course). The business model and hate-bandwagoning was so bad that I don’t think we had a chance to see if Artifact is actually good. It is a great foundation and hopefully the conversation around it will be about the game itself this time around.

Certainly true. I wish it well but for me, it seems overly complicated and from the video it just didn’t grab me.

Yeah, it is pretty overwhelming to try to get into, but so were MTG and Dota at least in their early days. But yeah its a big ask for players to make that kind of investment these days and is only a bigger hurdle with how terrible Artifact 1.0’s launch was.

Then again, there is a lot of positive buzz now about Fallout 76, so anything is possible with our gamer goldfish memories.

Is it too late to cut losses and move onto something gamers actually want, like Half-Life 3…

Well they just released the third major entry in the Half-Life series, so they are clearly working on multiple projects. The people working on games like Dota Underlords and Artifact aren’t necessarily being pulled away from “real” Valve games people want.
