Star Citizen discusses the steps needed to add salvage gameplay

Miner. Delivery driver. Bounty hunter. Criminal. There are several sorts of loose professions in Star Citizen’s alpha right now, but one sort of profession that has a couple of planned ships but no actual implementation in-game yet: salvage. That gameplay loop, and the roadmap on how CIG plans to get there, was the topic of a recent video.

Salvage will involve four different pillars: hull scraping, siphoning valuable things like fuel, oxygen, or even data, removing components like coolers or power plants, and “the maw,” which literally involves crunching up the remaining ship’s skeleton for disposal. There are some fundamental systems that still need to be added to ships, such as having actual physical components that can be added and removed manually — ships released in the past 18 months to two years already have some access hatches of this sort, but older ships will need those features added, and then physical components will need to be included and a new power system will have to be added.

Incidentally, the introduction of physical components and power systems will link up with engineer gameplay, with multi-crew ships requiring a skilled engineer to manage power flow and ship subsystems; this form of gameplay is currently in the design stage.

Ultimately, the roadmap to salvage will take a series of steps: introduce the new power system, add physical ship components, release hull scraping, and then ship breakdown. There are also a variety of persistence hallmarks that need to be met so derelict ships and their relevant components stay in the same place, and the devs aren’t sure what parts will comprise the first pass of salvage will look like, but it’ll be iterated upon just as mining has been.

Are they finally getting back to Salvaging, after it was scrapped from both the Spring 2019 and Spring 2020 roadmaps? From what it sounds, this’ll be a 2021 feature, assuming it doesn’t get scrapped again. It also means that putting Salvage on the map all the way back in 2019 was nothing more than a lure to bring in more backers and get more Reclaimer sales.

Yeah, the current released version seems to be missing….something.

A release?

salvage is overdue and there’s a fairly large vocal crowd hungry for the ‘mawing’ but the retrofit of older ships to accommodate component gameplay will take a while, even if its a priority to get components working for a variety of reasons (like Chris noted above, engineer gameplay and stuff like fuel and siphoning)

When I read these articles on SC development, I always have the same thought: Damn, this game is a long way off from release. Of course, why release when you’ve taken in almost $300 million based on promises and dreams? If the game just remains in development, people will focus on the potential rather than the reality, and the cash flow won’t stop for many years.

the cash flow is better now than ever, and its likely to continue to flow even faster as the game becomes playable, the real issues are technical hurdles and project complexity, scope creep, etc

it really doesn’t make any sense for them to raise all this money and then spend it building four offices and hiring 500 peeps just so they can not develop the game to keep people focused on potential

more likely some real world problems, hubris and a steep learning curve

I believe that they’re working towards an eventual release. I just don’t think they’re in any sort of rush, at all. Maybe the investment groups they got money from are putting pressure on. But, how many believe the game will have a commercial release in less than four or five more years? And yes, this is pure belief and speculation, not fact.

still be in beta in 2024, SQ42 will have been released but gold will still be a few years after that, I think we’re on the same page here

but its the reason why where we differ, I think they’re trying its more a matter of the tech and all of the moving parts, they’ve made it crazy hard on themselves if you ask me

when will they declare ‘beta’ and how much of a playable game will there be in beta, will they be able to fix some server backend service stuff and improve the QoL or will it be a hot mess all along as they tinker and iterate?

When is this scheduled to come out? I’m assuming 2020 (I thought it was supposed to come out last year but must have been delayed).

tier 0 handscraping maybe, but from the way Papy spoke the mawing and siphoning seemed fairly far off

2012. And I’m not joking.
