Naoki Yoshida dismisses Final Fantasy XVI directorship rumors

But he also doesn't

The rumors have flown around about Naoki Yoshida being attached to Final Fantasy XVI as the game’s director. In fact, the rumors have been flying about Final Fantasy XVI and Naoki Yoshida for a while now, something that this exact site has speculated about. But during the ongoing re-broadcast of old live broadcasts with commentary by Yoshida himself, one of the rumors was brought up to Yoshida himself, who dismissed it as fake… sort of.

Here’s the (rough) translation of Yoshida’s comments:

Ah, looks like some kind of big fake news came out. I’ll say it clearly – it’s annoying. I’m still going to continue being in charge of [Final Fantasy XIV] for more years to come (as long as I don’t die from sickness or accident). So please ignore any non-official announcements. It’s so bothersome.

At face value, this is a nail in the coffin that stops all of those rumors dead. At the same time, though… his actual statement does not say that there is no Final Fantasy XVI or that he won’t direct it, just that he will continue to be in charge of FFXIV for more years to come, which is not in any way incongruous with speculation of FFXVI in production and not due to come out for years anyhow. This is a good point to remind people that Yoshida is an expert at picking what he denies and says to create an implication; witness the assumptions that the destination for Shadowbringers would be Garlemald, something he deliberately implied but did not confirm.

Really, it seems like the most unambiguous statement here is to ignore non-official announcements, and by extension, don’t ask him about them. Which makes sense right at face value. If Yoshida could or would say something about these rumors in a public space, he would do so at a specific event with Square-Enix backing, not in the comments of a video.

That’s not to say this confirms that he is the director of FFXVI or that it’s happening or anything like that. It’s confirming that he’s tired of being asked about this rumor and he doesn’t want to respond to it any more. And at the end of the day, that’s a good assumption. If there’s a new game coming, you’ll hear about it, and it certainly doesn’t mean he’s leaving FFXIV soon.

I think its just wishful thinking. 7 remake aside the single player mainline final fantasy games have been “flawed” to be kind since at least FFX and that was like 17 or 18 years ago. After “The Decade of Lightning” tanked the brand in japan to the point famitsu was writing how kids only knew of it through the 3ds theatrythmn games Dragon Quests former rival was going down the toilet and he is quite rightly treated as ‘the man with the plan’ after XIV revived the brand as a whole while it was struggling with the development of XV whos reaction was “mixed” at best. People seem to want to see the guy who ‘gets’ final fantasy to make a mainline single player release rather than the last 15+ years of “lets not make what we want, lets make what we think will have wider market appeal” thats been the bane of the brand like it has been a lot of brands last gen to the point it almost killed companies like Capcom.

Personally i would be much more interested in Shadowbringers Writer Natsuko Ishikawa working on a XVI since XIVs writing has a lot of people working on parts at different times but Yoshida leaving XIV would be like when WoW lost its leads and we all know what happened there since Brain Drain is a bitch to persistent ongoing projects.

Or maybe Yoko Taro, go hog wild. Just anything but Nomaru. I want off his wild ride.

I could be wrong here, but isn’t the rumor is that he’s working on a mainline Square-Enix game, not necessarily a FF game? There are plenty of other long running series in SE’s lineup, like Dragon Quest, the Mana series, Star Ocean, and Itadaki Street / Fortune Street (although the last one is doubtful unless he’d be overseeing the NA/EU port of the most recent game for PS4, which does include Minfillia.)

A bit clickbaity, I mean yeah good to get the info that hes not gonna be involved but really? Of course theres gonna be a FFXVI :D Its just gonna take awhile longer.

I’d love to see a FF game under YoshiP that wasn’t an MMO, his leadership of XIV has been nothing short of incredible and I’d love to see what he could do with more creative freedom and flexibility since he wouldn’t be salvaging a dumpster fire.

On splitting duties though…YoshiP, pls no. He already looks exhausted most of the time (though is always in good spirits) and knowing the work culture at many Japanese developers (especially Squeenix) I can’t imagine the toll that trying to direct a live MMO and a new installment of a mainline FF game at the same time.

I do enjoy how much care he takes with his words, and attire, to hint at stuff/troll folks a bit though. He seems like a superb dude and I’d love to hang out with him for a night of heavy drinking and wild tales.

I make this comment with all due love and respect, as both an original patron of this site and a Final Fantasy 14 player for the past year…

MY GOD, can we all stop using roman numerals for Final Fantasy games????

I had to read this article twice before i figured out what the hell it was about; “FFXVI” is almost indistinguishable from “FFXIV” at a glance.

We aren’t Romans. We don’t (generally) speak Latin. Let’s STOP using Roman Numerals, OK?

Yeah! Let’s get with the program, it’s year MMXX!

OR we could just go back to the good old days of reading things completely, instead of just giving them a glance. ;)

(Sorry for the snark, but I actually like roman numerals! As well as spelling things the way they are spelled, rather than how it’s convenient.)

Get over it. The Series been named this way for AGES and now they arent gonna change it just because you suck at reading it.

Not to double down, but that’s the OFFICIAL name of the game. does not exist (I went and double-checked). The roman-numeral version naming scheme has been around since FFII in 1988. It’s part of the insane tradition that is Final Fantasy. Writing it any other way is just incorrect.
