Massively OP Podcast Episode 275: What truly matters

On this week’s show, MJ, Justin, and eventually Bree look over the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement on gaming, scout into the future of Elite: Dangerous and Path of Exile, pour one out for Final Fantasy XIV’s cancelled fan festival, and talk up a certain Star Wars Galaxies podcast Bree guested on.

It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

Thank you for fielding my questions this week!

I’m so sorry I hit MJ with two WoW ones, but I loved the idea of a real-life style magician. Maybe as a tank spec, where you use smoke/decoys/hat-pulled rabbits to pull threat to your adds while avoiding damage. Alternatively, it could be a profession. Craft your own tricks, sell-able smoke bombs or cc consumables, slowly create your own emotes that you can use to perform for others. Maybe buff those that watch your performances with different buffs for different tricks….it could be awesome!

I’m having a hard time figuring out how MMO studios can control content for racist/xenophobic chat, short of hiring people to watch general channels or read reported text. When that isn’t possible (especially for smaller studios – I’ve been playing DDO lately), maybe appoint members of the community as trusted moderators, sort of like how Twitch does for streamers? Are there any games, or really any mass-populated service online, that does this well?

For Mage class, in Maplestory there are many mage classes, Kinesis use the power of telekinesis and the ability have chess theme! the class use the mobs themselves to make damage to the themselves, also throw stuff from the environment at mobs.

Kanna is a Japanese themed class, main weapon is a fan and it summons familiars and yokai monsters.

Both are unique, i don’t think i saw anything like them in any game.

For the WoW class question I’m not going to lie I felt certain Bree was going to say a Mage that’s a lot like a bard, in fact its a Magi….bard… just to get a bard class :)

MJ was getting there with the Fantasia magical brooms. What Bree needs is a mage that builds magical factories to make stuff for her to sell.

And there are magical tomes where you store your magical droids and everything on them doesn’t count against your storage space, because magic.

Hah you know, this is because my first experiences with bards were with melee bards, running around in plate and smacking stuff with spears. I never really got the bards as spellcaster mage properly in my brain.

That said, adding a real bard to WoW, of the same caliber as WoW’s other classes, would definitely see me going back!

It’s kind of sad that it took a televised execution of a black man to get the gaming companies to work towards eliminating racist comments in chat…. just saying…it’s not like black gamers haven’t been complaining about this since forever.

When I saw the message from the people behind Call of Duty I thought it was from a satire site.

I feel like you guys should revisit these topics when the dust settles, and to call some POC from the gaming industry to talk about their experiences.

Reader

Then you’ll get accused of tokenism.

It doesn’t have to be tokenism. There are plenty of black game streamers and podcasters. Tokenism is when you are just doing as performative work. I don’t think MOP would do that.

I heard about this second hand but, last thanksgiving or so, a podcast wanted to talk about all the ways native americans have been portrayed in videogames, many of which have been awful. So they did a sensible thing and brought on, I assume, a native american to talk about it, and the guest made the also sensible point that they never asked to be brought on to discuss generic videogames, just the native american ones for this special episode.

Good? We need more of that. If the alternative is to just dust it off below the carpet, then we’ll never solve the issue.

Thanks Brazen! If y’all have been listening this past spring, you’ve already heard a couple of our poc chat. But since we’re an all-remote team, I don’t really think of folks that way or want to put them out there that way. Nobody wants to be collected like pokemon, to quote a streamer I heard the other day. And the internet (and trying to hire talent rather than resumes) can be a wonderful equalizer. So we have a good mix of poc and women and orientation and religion and disability, much more diverse than we were 10 years back, but we need to be even moreso to really represent the MMO audience.

Bruno – did you catch Andrew’s piece a while back about being harassed as a poc by the police while playing POGO? I’ll edit this with a link when I am back at my desk.

Yes, but my memory isn’t good. Feel free to refresh my memory.

Just read it. I find that a insteresting concept. For instance: I’m read as white in Brazil. I wonder how i would be read as in the US.

It’s weird how characteristics are different based on the POV of the country you’re in.

Thank you for linking that then. /bows

Dunno why I said diversity when justice would’ve made much more sense. Bree needs to write stuff down before ranting at trolls.
