Raph Koster’s Playable Worlds studio raises an additional $10 million in funding

We still know nothing about what the first project out of Raph Koster’s new studio, Playable Worlds, will actually look like. But we do know that the studio is raising money, and that’s a good sign. A new round of Series A funding has secured an additional $10 million, led by Galaxy Interactive and Bitkraft Esports Ventures. The latter was the lead investor in the studio’s funding round last October, with Koster noting that the support enables the studio to hire more staff and continue onward with the project.

For those of you who don’t recall, Playable Worlds is the aforementioned new studio founded by Star Wars Galaxies and Ultima Online veteran Raph Koster, with $2.7 million raised in initial funding last year in October. The game under development has not yet been officially revealed, but Koster has shared a number of his design goals for the game as development hums along. And with another $10 million in funding, development will continue to hum along indeed.

This is the great hope for MMOs. Or at least the original dream that MMOs represented. I realise that a modern PvPing, min-maxing ‘dude’ likely won’t understand what Raph’s trying to do at all, but that’s fine. For those of us, back there in the mid 90s, looking at the possibilities of MMOs before it all went off the rails and so one-track with WoW clones, what Raph’s cooking, I’ll be buying.

Exactly.

As we’ve learned over the past few years, if it’s an MMORPG being made for $13 million, it’s probably not going to be much or soon. Maybe there’s a lot more funding to come. I doubt it’s an MMO that they’re working on, though.

Raph is my favorite dev of all time. I have enjoyed the things he’s created or worked on in past MMOs and I can’t help but have a piqued interest for this gaming studio.

The best MMORPG is always the next one.
Looking forward to it nonetheless!

This is all well and good but kinda getting tired of “I have a recognizable name and and i have an IDEA send me money” years, and years, and years later, oh right and a few more years later even… nothing.

I feel the same about Raph as i initially felt about Mark Jacobs, confident af, and yeah, so here’s hoping i suppose.

The best thing to do is pick an mmorpg or two and enjoy your mmorpg worlds, something awesome happens then great, if not, you still have your homes.

mmorpg’s were not meant to be jumping around in (greedy corporations invented the disposable mmorpg’s).

SWG:Legends, Classic and Retail combined are far more than enough to keep me busy for years to come. For example lately i noticed i’m playing retail like crazy, leveling alts as if there is no tomorrow and loving it and tbh i’m very much looking forward to Shadowlands, i think i’m on my last alt now though, done like 7(‘ish? about) to 120 now, and yeah knowing how SL is going to do alts so much better, it’s starting to get tedious a little knowing it’s going to be so much better in SL. outside that still in Classic almost every day and legends everyday ofc.

Maybe I am mistaken, but I don’t think Kostar did a Kickstarter, or seek other crowd funding. He wasn’t asking people to send him money. He started a company and he is getting investors the way a company normally does…from other entities that fund business ventures. Nothing wrong in that. His investors evaluated the risk of giving him money and apparently decided his past experiences matter.

A hope? A chance…

What Brazen said – this is a swerve away from crowdfund hell and good thing too…

Very nice. I really hope Raph can take this someplace where we can all enjoy.
