One Shots: Reading rainbow

Last week we asked readers to share their favorite color in the form of a screenshot. But why pick one color when WildStar had all of them in blindingly bright neon glory?

Utakata casts our minds back to a time when double-jumping and chatty taxi drivers were a thing in our MMOs. Well, now I’ve bummed myself out, and I’m not even to the first picture! This pic is a glorious reminder of how pretty WildStar was, indeed.

“I like pink in Final Fantasy XIV,” said Scott. “Maybe too much.”

Is that even possible? I like pink too. It’s a happy color and deserves our full support and love. Don’t be ashamed of your pink preferences people!

“Sometimes, online games can feel a little… prescient,” said Mysecretid. “The Division 2 appeared quite a while before the current viral pandemic started — or the more-recent pushback against long-standing institutionalized racial injustice ramped up — but some of the scenic details my character keeps discovering in the game feel like they could’ve been lifted from today’s headlines.”

I hate to tell the rest of MMOs, but if you’re missing colors, chances are that Square Enix has stolen them.

“Let me dig into my /gpose addiction,” posted Josh. “With the right filters sunlight in FFXIV be absolutely golden.”

And while Hurbster isn’t loving Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor as much as hoped, at least it’s generating some cool screenshots like this below picture of the northern lights and one exuberant statue.

Quick! Before the authorities find my secret lair, I need to get you your screenshot challenge of the week. In honor of Hurbster up there, let’s take some pictures of iconic and interesting statues in MMOs and share them with the crowd!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

No one is sure why the big gun points directly at Old Man Hurston, but no one seems to care either.

Not an mmorpg, yes i do take breaks when i come across a outstanding single player game. I finished og Mafia 1 and Mafia 2 back in time, and watched my son play some of Mafia 3 on xbox, and ofc was always going to get it on the PC and play it proper.

That time has come, bought the definitive, and omg Mafia 1 looks like it’s going to be incredible come this August.

atm tackling Mafia 2 Definitive Edition, i’ve read much complaining about nothing really, and the fact remains the same, a legendary game is a legendary game, my gawd is it improved, so immersive af, peeps moan about anything and everything.

Love this license plate though :)

Thank you for the feature, Justin!

I’ll see if I can spot any worthy statuary in my games for next time.

(I love the word “statuary” — I don’t know why) :-)

A lot of really interesting pics of statuary are already up, so I tried to go a slightly different way with my submissions:

1) My character in The Division 2 just liberated the Lincoln Memorial from gun-toting extremists claiming to be patriots. Or maybe I was watching the news. I can’t remember. :-)

2) My main character in Star Trek Online visited the memorial statue to Spock on the planet Vulcan. On a meta-level, the statue also honors actor Leonard Nimoy, who made the character of Spock a popular-cultural icon.

Ishgard in FFXIV is full of statues, particular of the kind venerating the entity from among the gods of the realm they most closely feel kinship to, Halone the Fury. The Firmament, currently under reconstruction courtesy of both Ishgardians and adventurers (us), is certainly no exception.

Also, the zone has by far one of my favorite songs currently in the game and in my opinion the best use of the Heavensward theme, so it’s got that going for it too.

Thank you for the shout-out. I have here statues of Vivec and Asura along with Leki’s Blade and the Brothers of Strife.

Statues you say? Well, FFXIV’s Heavensward expansion was very fond of statues, but then Stormblood upped the game with its massive statue of Rhalgr (featured in the cinematic, and players even get a quest to go up on the palm of that hand and spar with Lyse)

Rhalgr kinda looks like he’s holding up his hand and asking, “Hey! Where did all this fog come from so suddenly???” :-)

If you’re looking for iconic statues the Argonath surely has to be up near the top of the list. Imposing and grand, it is yet highly difficult to get a good shot of it in game 😕

Other imposing if somewhat less iconic statues from the LOTRO world:

The Cuthstan outside Stangard in the Great River which is almost worse to get good screenshots of than the Argonath is.

The huge statue of Elendil at High King’s Crossing in Evendim.

The big face on the side of of the hill under Amon Lhaw as seen from the top of Amon Hen. The twin face-statue from Amon Hen lies fallen at the base of the cliff beneath it.

These are probably the most known and recognized statues in the world of games.
