The Daily Grind: What are the coolest MMO alien races?

OK, for today’s topic, we’re going to be limiting ourselves strictly to scifi MMORPGs (sorry fantasy, you’ll have to settle for pretty much 95% of the posts on any given day). As we explore virtual galaxies, we’ve bumped into plenty of alien races — some playable, some helpful, and some grumpy as all get out.

So the question is this: What are the coolest MMO alien races? Honestly, for this topic, I could probably write a huge essay on WildStar’s alien roster alone, from the adorable Lopp to the corporate Protostar clones. But other MMOs have pretty groovy aliens too, like SWTOR’s Nautolans, Star Trek Online’s Borg, and Elite: Dangerous’ Thargoid.

What do you think? When you visit strange, new worlds, which lifeforms intrigue you the most?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Best Alien race? a dead one. Humanity First!

Um… human with a little modification, meets human with some modification, meets robotic human, meets animal human, meets human with a teensy bit of modification, meets tall human, meets short human, meets…

Yeah, picture complete, you get it. Mostly they are just different looking humans. It’s sad.

If you play GW or GW2 then Humans would be the only option for alien race.

Do you even play GW2? or are you saying the humans are the aliens in the game, and the other 4 species you can play are the natives?

As a fairly shallow and predictable player, I like cat people. Cathar, Caitians, Ferrasans… But in terms of “actually alien” non-Terran life forms, probably just Thargoids from Elite: Dangerous. So far they’re the only race I’ve seen that actually feels *alien.* Nearly everything else is “Star Trek” alien, where they’re still basically just human actors with stuff glued to their face.

Everything about the Thargoids was mysterious and otherworldly, from their eight-fold symmetry ships to the fact that their organic technology seems to be inherently non-compatible with human tech. To the point that even being near a piece of their tech will corrode and eventually kill your ship.

As much as I love SC, i find its alien races boring.
My favourite alien race is Necrons from Warhammer 40K universe. They have a fascinating lore. I wish someone made a AAA MMO based on it.

I love the Borg. Something about a race of cyborgs that have mysterious origins assimilating entire civilizations and adding their technology as they expand the universe. Hive mind. They’re terrifying and intriguing.

How about some pink Klingons? According to Futurama they appear to like that color.

My favourite alien species in any game was always the Kheldians from City of Heroes, primarily because they are one of the only alien races in a game I’ve played that were inherently non humanoid (although could shapeshift into humanoid form).

I like it when aliens are not always anthropomrphic as it is more plausible and less developmentally lazy :)

Coolest mmorpg alien species? Honestly I’ve got no favorites at this time, I’m still waiting to see something player species wise in mmorpgs that makes me go “oh, cool! I want to play that!”

I prefer the more scientifically accurate “species” over the more scientifically informal and problematic “races” as an aside. The term/word “race” just needs to die in a dumpster fire. It’s an artificial social construct with no real merit and only tends to be used in the our world as a way to divide us.

^.

Actually, in terms of humans, where this use derives from here… it was coined to excuse treating some humans as less than human because they weren’t the correct ‘race’ and were therefore sub-human.

Race is pretty foul in this context, if one looks at the history behind it. :(

That was my point. I guess I made the point in too much of a diplomatic manner. :) Hence the terms social construct and not a scientific term.
