Sea of Thieves is poised to start testing ‘bare-bones’ custom servers

Ahoy there! Custom servers for Sea of Thieves have been spotted — but right now, they’re so far out on the horizon that you probably shouldn’t cancel those important plans to binge watch the latest Netflix series.

Rare announced that limited testing is about to commence for these private servers with a “bare-bones feature set” that will allow players to set up ships and invite friends to join them in on the fun. These servers, at least for the time being, won’t allow for any gold or reputation progression.

“We see a bright future for custom servers in Sea of Thieves,” said the studio, “but we want to start purposefully with the dual purpose of learning from this initially small audience and expanding the custom server toolset before we think about rolling out more widely and what that will entail. The first step is to roll these out in an alpha state and start learning. We expect this to be a lengthy alpha phase where we listen, learn and evolve what custom servers deliver in terms of tools available to those using them.”

Really don’t understand why they don’t just go all the way and make PvE servers at this point. All progression is cosmetic based, so it’s not like there’s balancing to worry about. Unless I’m mistaken, the cash shop purchases are separate from the gold earnable ones? That’s the only real reason I could see.

They want to force folks to play in PvP environments, that’s about it.

Yet one more development studio that just doesn’t get it, indeed…

100% this

PvP in the game is a horrible mess. Stupid, janky gameplay and tactics destroy what could be actual cool pirate like battles. Both ship to ship, and pirate to pirate.

For those that are disappointed with the state of pvp in the game, a PVE option is a must.

While the regular adventure servers aren’t that bad from what I’ve experienced so far, custom servers seem like a no-brainer at this point. Let folks play the way they want to play, and also let folks set up community/RP-based servers if they want to.

Like Alliance servers are already a thing where discord groups basically manipulate a server to get all 6 ships controlled and in an alliance so they can focus on grinding rep/gold or whatever else. Might as well just allow that to be an option normally.

Custom servers puts more power into players’ hands though which I guess is a scary notion, but it’s overall a positive one in the long run.

Also they might as well stop being sissies and give PvE servers to folks who want them. Even if it’s at reduced gains or the inability to use certain features (Emissaries, Reapers’ Bones rep, whatever).

I’ve been playing Sea of Thieves for a couple weeks now, and the PvP has actually been almost nonexistent. Most of the time that it’s happened, we’d already dumped off all our treasure, so there was nothing to lose anyway. We’ve lost more ships to NPC skeleton pirates than to players.

I don’t understand what the game would offer if there were private servers with no gold progression. The game doesn’t offer anything but aesthetics to buy with your gold anyway.

Are they considering allowing modding or something?

Community stuff and lite modding it sounds like (being able to go beyond 6 ships per server, being able to choose which type of ships are on the server (i.e. Sloops only)).

Big thing would be RP servers and then competitions or just community hangouts.

Its the fact that in its current state, PvP is just a griefing element mostly. Imagine if someone could lay down temporary speed bumps on the road you were driving on, just to slow you down, or make you change course.

Some people dont like other people screwing with what they want to do, even if all it does is cost them time. Some people have a limited time to play.

My question wasn’t about the lack of PvP in the custom servers. It was about the lack of progression. Without the little bit of progression the game already offers, what would private servers offer players? The puzzle quests are fun, and the game has one of the best fishing minigames, but in the end, there’s not a whole lot of things to do.

(I was just pointing out that the PvP has been pretty much nonexistent anyway).

Thats a very good question

Im hoping that progression is just missing for testing purposes.

Awwwwwww, What are all PvPers going to do once the official servers are empty because nobody wants to be ganked by ass-hat kids?

That’s why they stressed this isn’t a PvE server option so folks can’t earn gold/rep while on these things.

Still I think they’d see far greater success if PvE servers were an option, even with limited rulesets.

This would literally be the only way I would play this game. Just myself and my friends, going on adventures, not putting up with others’ nonsense.

Yeah and since rep/gold is literally just for cosmetics it’s not like you’re technically missing too much outside of being able to look fancy if you don’t play regular servers.

Still think PvE servers with limits (i.e. you don’t get to do the risk/reward things like reaper’s chests or emissary voyages) would be good too and likely boost the population/sales more than if they hold onto their regular format. Basically folks would have to go to Adventure servers if they want to actually level up Reaper’s Bones, Emissaries, do Reaper’s runs, and get the commendations revolved around those things.

Im hoping that the no rep, no gold bit is just for testing

As long as your “character” is unique to a private server, it doesnt really matter. Who cares if a private server character earns a bunch of gold and rep… just as long as they cant transfer it over to the public ones.

Yeah but if they did that then players wouldn’t have a reason to go out of their custom servers.
