Project Gorgon is calling it — the end of beta, that is.
Coupled with a July 16th patch notice was the announcement that the beta phase of the indie fantasy MMORPG has finally come to an end. However, there has been no further talk about leaving early access or an official launch.
Correction:Â It looks as though the “beta” being referenced wasn’t the game’s beta state, but rather a “Steam beta feature” that the team had been experimenting with these past few weeks. Apologies for the misunderstanding.
The content update that arrived this past week updated Project Gorgon to a new version of the Unity engine, toughened up monsters, made a change to the way combat XP is awarded, and taught pets to walk a little closer to their owners.
The creators also teased a new animal form that players can change into: “It can be found deep in a cave in Kur. We also want to remind players to always take warnings in item descriptions seriously!”
Still waiting for dwarves.
Well, that was confusing.
Important thing i learned in recent years: don’t pay for unreleased game.
Generally I’d agree, and YMMV, but I’ve had more enjoyment out of this “unreleased” game than a lot of full AAA releases. Well worth the money, and then some.
I agree.
However, this one I paid $30 at steam release and hundreds of hours into it I have greatly enjoyed
Keep in mind that this game was available for free for years so it’s not like most people didn’t know what they where getting before hand.
Game was in a free to play alpha for some years before it finally went into a paid beta.
No, the beta client for the beta game ended. The beta still lives!
I had to re-read the tweet/forum post a couple times myself to be somewhat sure that this is not the game hitting a “1.0” or whatever.
Fake news!
This isn’t strictly true, though, is it? There’s nothing announced about the game itself “leaving beta”. It’s the engine update, to the new Unity version, which up until now has been hidden behind a “beta” branch in the Steam client. It has now graduated out of said beta branch and is now used for everyone.
Yeah, that’s what it reads like to me both in the linked tweet and their announcement post.
The game itself isn’t out of beta–hence the channel comments in the Twitter post. But the engine upgrade they were (beta) testing with a smaller group is officially done hence the ‘real game channel’ bit.
It’s a little… odd, to be sure, how they handled the conventions for it. But… if the game was officially out of Beta? There’d be much more of a fanfare being paid to it.

Beta build refers to the Steam client. You can opt into ‘beta’ versions of game updates and the like to further test or try out untested fixes from the developers. This is purely just the Steam ‘Beta version’ being pushed to the live game. Not the game itself coming out of beta.
