The Daily Grind: What’s the best MMORPG summer event?

16

Poor summer, it just can’t get a break, even in a non-pandemic year. Sure, it’s full of vacations and sunny days, but it got the short end of the stick when it came to holidays. That seems true for MMORPGs too, which have struggled to create summer events with some — any — sort of personality.

They do try, bless ’em. Some go with a beach party theme, while others do a generic “boy, sure is hot, ain’t it?” approach. There are picnics, mazes, and oblique references to the sun. Which is also hot.

Let’s not overlook summer events this year! Which MMO event do you think actually does a good job and is a lot of fun during these balmy months?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Weatherstock in LotRO! Nothing’s more awesome than when the players build their own seasonal events.

I dislike time-limited content to such an extent that I refuse to play seasonal events if I don’t have full control over their schedule.

(Which, incidentally, means I will “cheat” in offline games that do have events triggering based on the real world date. It’s why, for example, I consider Animal Crossing without time-travelling to be a frustrating waste of time, but the same game with time-travelling — and, thus, with absolute control over when I experience each seasonal event — to be relaxing and enjoyable enough for me to sink hundreds, if not thousands, of hours into.)

BTW, south hemisphere person here too, so for me summer events would only make sense six months from now anyway.

Being an Aussie and at the bottom end (Melbourne), it’s cold as crap here, summer events in MMORPGs never grabbed me, since it’s like 1-3 degrees C late night + morning when I usually get free time (kids in bed) and seeing all the sunny stuff just doesn’t feel ‘real’ :)

So, no events do a good job, not that I ‘hate them’, I just don’t relate, I still play them of course!

Maybe it’s just me, but I was thinking it might even be more fun to romp around the summer events when it’s snowy outside, and vice-versa.
