SEGA announces Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis for 2021

If Phantasy Star Online 2’s long-awaited arrival on western devices this past spring didn’t light your world on fire, then maybe you’ll be happier with Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, revealed at today’s Xbox Games Showcase. Twitter is currently busy arguing whether it’s a standalone game, expansion, or do-over, and apparently it’s a little bit of all three, as SEGA’s using the “2” but calling it a “redesign.”

“Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis will be coming in 2021! PSO2: NGS will surpass Phantasy Star Online 2 in every way, offering players limitless adventure and unparalleled character customization. The game has been redesigned as a best-in-class online action RPG experience!”

Here’s the whole trailer.

Sega’s announcement of the New Genesis update, may explain why they did not appear to be expending many resources to fix the installation issues plaguing some on Windows 10. Their A team developers have likely been working on the update for the last couple of years while the current game has been in essentially maintenance mode supported by Jr. developers and interns.

Another thing I found interesting was the difference in supported platforms in the end frame of the trailer between the Japanese and North American versions. The Japanese version shows Playstation and Switch support (no Xbox) while the North American version shows Xbox and Windows 10 support (no Playstation or Switch).

I think this dashes any hope of seeing Playstation or Switch support outside of Japan anytime soon. It is almost certain that the New Genesis update was also part of the deal with Microsoft to bring PSO2 to North America and subject to Xbox console launch exclusivity.

Finally, while there was no mention of what graphics engine is being used for the update, can’t count out Unreal yet. That would raise the possibility that the next PC platform could actually be the Epic Game Store, perhaps from August through the New Genesis launch. Sega would be more than happy to take that Epic money!

Ok, set 1000 years after PSO2, and basically everything is new except for some character cosmetics.

Its a sequel.

Sounds like Defiance 2050 or Secret World Legends—keep the same map, assets, gameplay, etc., but change a few systems and re-release it.

Not entirely… accurate to say it dropped on Western Devices.
It dropped on U.S devices, pretty much anyone else in the Western world had zero consideration from Sega at all and had to jump through many additional hoops to play this and deal with ensuing latency issues etc..

Nice to hear a version may actually be reaching the rest of us legitimately though.

And now I’m interested.

The original PSO 2 was a hallway simulator.

So seeing speculation that this is basically the ARR reboot for this? Which…I guess I’m pretty cool with, I’ve barely played PSO2 for now.

Hopefully they’ll release it on a platform that’s not a mess and a nightmare to use right out of the gate this time around on PC.

Which means the US will see a botched launch of this in 2030.

Sorry, but after the failed Microsoft PC launch I will pass on this.
