Valiance Online posts two-minute gameplay video ahead of open beta

The other day when I heard that Valiance Online was going to hold a one-week open beta event in August, I rushed to my calendar and put that as a “high priority” alert for those dates. Yeah, I’m shameless — but I’m also excited to dive into this City of Heroes’ spiritual successor for the first time.

As we count down the days until August 10th, the dev team helping to feed our hype with a new two-minute gameplay video that shows off the city landscape and combat. Watching it, it’s clear that this is still very much a work in progress, but there are some elements such as the power effects, sound design, and user interface that are quite appealing indeed.

And there are a few new screenshots for your eye-peepers to scope:

Times are tough for us superhero MMO fans. Champions Online is barely updated anymore, and DC Universe Online feels outdated. Unless you’re willing to play COH on some dodgy pirate server (which I’m not), that’s the only choice you have. But this looks like it needs a LOT longer in the oven.

The sad part is even on “dodgy pirate servers” COH is still a far better game than Champions or DCUO.

I’m not even an old-school fan, I only really got into it after the source code leak went public, but I’ve 100% played it more than either Champions or DCUO, and enjoyed myself more in the process.

I paid for 2 full deluxe copies of City of heroes and City of villains. I hardly consider it dodgy to still get to play a product I paid for.

The governments (or whomever) out there need to pull their 1970 laws out of their backside and update them to deal with virtual properties and ownerships of todays tech world. A company shouldnt be able to deny you access to something you own just because they no longer wish to host the servers for it. Can you image losing access to your car just because Honda or Toyota decided they were done with supporting that model?

Hell, even Microsoft doesnt stop you from using older versions of Windows even when they stop supporting it.

At the very least there needs to be a maximum time limit that a company can keep its abandoned product from being used freely. Typically this is 7 years… and well.. CoH more than meets that standard.

The only “dodgy” thing going on is when a company says “Sorry, you cant use the thing you paid for anymore”.

There is nothing even remotely dodgy about the Homecoming servers.

Everything just seems so slow. Just not for me. I don’t need it to be balls to the walls type of thing, but if the hype video fails to keep me excited then there is a real problems somewhere. Maybe this one just isn’t for me which is sad because I love superhero stuff.

Fortunately, CoH is a thing again so that I don’t have to resort to that.

I have always been a “shadow stalker”of these comments and posts. I’ve literally been around for yeeeeears. I’ve never linked or created a profile to post because I am never able to articulate my point as well as other like-minded people can. (edited spelling)

However, I for some reason felt compelled to write today…

I’ve been following this game since it was announced on MassivelyOP and have checked the articles and comments as I am a huge Super Hero fanboy when it comes to online games.

I honestly do not understand the appeal to this game in its previous or current state. Every time I come to see a “new video” I am always disappointed. This being an open-beta week “announcement” type article I honestly expected a much more polished video.

I am likely being hyper critical while knowing this isnt a AAA studio… but why would anyone choose to play this over say Champions Online? I feel like the animations, power options, customization etc… are so superior to this. (Monetization aside of course)

Anyhow, just my opinion… I am sure there are plenty of folks with opposing opinions and are very happy with the state of this game and the videos that go out. I just don’t get it. :(

This doesnt even look like the work from an indie studio. Most indie products look like they have higher production value than this.

It looks like a college project….which it basically is.

This should still be in alpha.
The trailer just looks bad. Graphics look dated, animations poor, effects look like placeholders, framerate is horrible, UI looks like a placeholder. At best this looks like a proof of concept tech demo. Pretty much everything looks like a placeholder. And then there is that awful, washed out, blurry haze covering all the visuals.

This just screams amateur. Im not trying to be mean. Im just being realistic. This game stands no chance. When there are engines out there that give you stock assets that look better, animate better, and perform better out of the box, you cant even think to compete or impress if your hand crafted things dont even remotely compare.

Even the very dated graphics of the original influence (CoH) still hold up better in all aspects compared this. You can expect to be any sort of “spiritual successor” with what we have being shown here.

Gotta say, the sound design on those powers is nice. Sometimes it’s the little things, you know?

The particle effects from the fire… when they hit the target and look almost like the mob should be disintegrating is pretty cool. (the floating red/black/glowing amber specks) I just wish that they added textures to remove the mob from the screen to finish off that “look”.

Regarding the sound design itself… its okay i guess, but i think i lose the “immersion” or over-all appeal with how the power interacts with the characters and mobs.

something about the color saturation is off to me… like the buildings and roads are bland but then you have these super saturated bright colors in the mix…

It has improved since last time I played it but does look like there is much still left to do.

I wish them well!
