World of Warcraft ad accidentally shows up in Disney’s Spaceship Earth

So for those brave foolhardy souls venturing into Walt Disney World during this year of the pandemic, it must be a surreal experience to see normally crowded parks spread out and subject to all manner of extra precautions. But it must be even more surreal when an MMORPG just happens to pop up in one of Disney’s most popular dark rides.

Recently, some park goers were on EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth, the ride that goes up inside that giant golf ball and talks about the development of communication throughout history. Each of the cars that people ride are equipped with touch screens to keep them occupied during some of the ride’s more dull moments, and it was on these that — of all things — World of Warcraft appeared.

One rider took a short video showing how the touch screen opened up to a control panel that displayed a prominent Battle for Azeroth ad, which elicited some chuckles. A themepark MMO in a themepark? We’re into some Inception-type nuttiness now, boys and girls.

You should’ve seen us try to explain this to the cast member at the exit #Epcot #Disneyworld #wdw #waltdisneyworld #spaceshipearth #MyBFF #fyp #foryou

We took our kids to Disneyworld around the time of my youngest’s 4th birthday, the start of October … 2001. Yes, well less than a month after 9/11.

Understand, that IIRC planes only started flying again a couple of weeks before.

Disneyworld was DESERTED.

They had turned off the ridepass thing, it wasn’t needed. For those familiar with the parks, here are some anecdotes:
– my sons and I spent more time running through empty zigzag line queues than waiting in lines for Space Mountain. We went on it THREE full times in <45mins.
– a wait of about 10 mins for Dumbo
– the 'after lunch' show of Lion King had more performers than spectators – like, by a lot. We had eaten lunch, and wandered over, straight in, no line, sat front and center probably <10 mins before the show started. Maybe 50 spectators total?
– no lines in any store or food place.
– we saw everything. Everything we wanted, no waits, no delay, no time compromises. I think we even parked in maybe the first 4 rows of parking every day? Granted, we had little kids, we were going pretty early.
– Epcot was empty, it's like we had it to ourselves.

It was Disney Utopia. Short of buying out the whole park, nobody can get that experience. Ruined it for us. We can't ever go back, it'll never be like that again.

Reminds me of how Square developed and published a Disney-Final Fantasy crossover (Kingdom Hearts), which was a huge success.

Still is with Kingdom Hearts 3 being a little over a year and a half old, with an ending that basically screamed “we have no intention to stop this yet”.

I’ll never understand why that abomination exists.

Which, KH3 or the series as a whole? Both basically come down to $$$.

Soooo WoW’s next expansion after Shadowlands: Kingdom Hearts? That’s what they’re saying above me… o.O
