World of Warcraft is adding diminishing returns for secondary stats in Shadowlands

So secondary stats on gear in World of Warcraft have the potential to get out of control. Fortunately, the developers have a solution for Shadowlands by… wait, I heard someone shout, “by ensuring the endgame isn’t an ever-escalating series of rewards for overstuffed raid tiers.” That’s wrong. Be quiet. It’s by… no, wait, someone else shouted, “by flattening an overall power curve.” That’s wrong too. Look, it’s secondary stats getting diminishing returns, that’s what’s going on here.

The way this works will be familiar to anyone who had to deal with the phrase “Enhancement Diversification” before; in essence, once you reach 25% from a given secondary stat, you’ll require larger amounts to reach the next 1% increase. While it’s unclear just how this will affect math for gear upgrades moving forward, it does mean that stacking tons of one stat is no longer optimal even if that one stat is the best stat for your spec. It’ll be like balancing hit chance! But for every stat, all the time! Again!

I am scared to be honest, i only hope that you can actually Arena in Shadowlands without grinding your ass of mythic dungeons, raids and all the other boring PvE stuff like it is now.

Shadowlands is poised to be a expansion that while fun in practice, will have all the same issues that WoW always had.

That’s kind of how it goes. WoW has some deep-seated design issues that likely won’t ever change, and in some cases have been exacerbated over time as the devs decide to just double down on bad practices (i.e. reinventing the wheel every expansion to where past systems are rendered pointless/defunct).

For me it’s kind of been that way since WotLK where I enjoy it for awhile but then there’s just that point where I get tired of it once I’m in the endgame for awhile.

You’re not wrong. And i can’t see how Blizzard keeps up with it ( They don’t ), considering that they take 2 years making content to be devoured in the first months, because the game lacks open-ended content with longevity.

I would like these idiots to behave like a normal MMO company.

So I guess it’s coming back? I remember this from the BC era when I was juggling dodge/parry to avoid hitting diminishing returns too hard on either stat. Looking it up, it seems like this was a thing (at least for defensive stats like dodge) up through WoD.

I don’t even know what’s going on with secondary/tertiary stats and shit anymore (tuned that out way ago), but it’s not a bad solution to try to head off stat-stacking balance issues and overall power creep.

Granted, a better idea would be to smooth out the power gain and use gear to help balance out single-stat issues, and not need to rely on secondary systems like this that some players may not even know exist…but after this long I don’t think that’s ever gonna happen.

It’s bug for sure, reading some guild chat last night and you become more powerful if you remove a couple, add one back and hit less? take more damage? Stuff like that, no one seems to be able to wrap their head around it completely.

“stacking tons of one stat is no longer optimal even if that one stat is the best stat for your spec.”

Which i’m totally doing atm on my two mains. Which tbh i thought was stupid, as at first i was mixing it up, which make perfect sense, that was until a guildy said i should stack. Ummm ok. If this is a change and not a bug then bravo Blizz, good call for the rpg player.

Yes, the suites and developers have learned NOTHING from the BfA dumpster fire!

It actually looks like they are actively sitting around asking themselves “How can we make WoW even more unsatisfying and not fun to play?”

Well, they are succeeding in that quest, I think.

Just my 2c

2ndary stats have never been fun for me… so for me, the first failure is that.

This is a tell. They’re holding a hand of cards in Shadowlands and they just realized that when you draw the Three of Conduits, this band gets overpowered. So they’re applying a bandaid to fix a system they haven’t launched yet. This’ll be fine! Stop worrying!

Well, just so long as they wait until the last minute to do this. It’s a WoW tradition, and the expansion just wouldn’t feel like WoW if the systems were all tested before release.
