The Daily Grind: Are there any languishing MMOs you’re still hopeful will recover?

Sorry, guys.

You know, I was pretty down with the long wait for Final Fantasy XIV‘s most recent patch, but I have nothing on Secret World Legends fans. I had to wait two months longer than planned. They have been waiting for what feels like it has been four hundred years, and there’s no sign of hope on the horizon. And yet I know there are still SWL fans who are hoping that sooner or later, new content is coming, despite any and all disappointing evidence that it’s never happening.

Not that this is the only game languishing in a holding pattern; RIFT and Champions Online players would both like some substantial content updates, I have no doubt. But there is always the slight flash of hope that even though the game has languished, some day, there may be new content to experience. So are there any languishing MMOs you’re still hopeful will recover and start updating and impressing once again?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Just wanted to mention on a happier note that Myst Online (remember that one?) has fiiinallyyyy started adding fan-created content as of last Friday. This was always an option unofficially, of course, but now it’s happening on the official servers. The game is never going to “recover” in the sense that it will never be a commercially viable MMO, and very likely won’t ever get any more content from the devs, but fan content is breathing new life into it and the turnout on Friday was pretty incredible by the standard of that game’s numbers.

Secret World, like everyone else. It’s so unique and quirky, and there’s nothing else like it.

I would even be satisfied if they just brought the story arc to a conclusion rather than leaving it forever hanging.

I know that’s a pipe dream, though. It seems like Funcom is really great at starting MMOs, but then isn’t quite sure where to go from there and just shelves them and moves on. Maybe MMOs just aren’t good genre fit for them, since they seem to struggle with making a game persistent.

Like many others, I would like to see the Secret World and Rift out of maintenance mode. With TSW though I would prefer a return to the original game because they made Legends too easy. I remember I was going through the Transylvania region and enjoying it when that “patch” hit and everything became too unchallenging for me. I tried carrying on for a bit but it wasn’t long after that I gave up.

I played Rift for about 7 years all told and was part of a great guild for most of that time. I am still in touch with the remnants of it and they are still active in the game if somewhat diminished. I’ve tried going back to level up an alt but I can’t get any enthusiasm for it given it is unlikely that there will any significant development for it anymore.

I would prefer a working, consistent, fair, Classic private server (they could advance to more, but Classic would be ace) over anything the current ‘devs’ do, but still, if I became aware that Prophecy of Ahnket was being actually finished and featured polished after years of neglect, I’d probably be back. Not definitely, especially with my older PCs that funny enough don’t run it the best, but it’d be back near the middle of my radar.

Season Passes, weird world bosses, and a half-finished dungeon (have they dont much else?) don’t cut it.

Considering the chat room community nature of Secret World, I’d take a player run private server for that too – assuming it doesn’t devolve into total drama. Somehow, from what I’ve seen as an outsider to these things, I trust they’d be better about it than RIFT’s (former/present) community.

Don’t fill me with hope.

I’ll join TSW/SWL chorus. Setting is unique, exquisite even. Wonderful game and current situation is a great shame.

Secret world has got to be one of the best atmospheric games to even grace your brain. My experience includes wow, eso, ffxiv, eq, eq2, bdo. I’m glad I was around. For the overwhelming amount of parties with this game on stw and it’s reboot legends. What killed it wasn’t the lack of interest or playbase. What killed it was the public lack of dev support and nobody wants to stick around on a game where the devs tell you it’s getting lack of support. I’m so glad I was around for the experience before all that happened. If any game could make a return, it’s this game and it would shake alot of people up. The devs cut it off. Not the players.

There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream,
The earth, and every common sight
To me did seem
Apparelled in celestial light,
The glory and the freshness of a dream.
It is not now as it hath been of yore;—
Turn wheresoe’er I may,
By night or day,
The things which I have seen I now can see no more.

I would love to see Rift or SWL recover, and I would be over the moon to see Wildstar come back from the dead.

The problem with rift is the empty world. All the people playing it are the max level. And it’s questing is just too boring because you get so little XP from it. The only thing people do now is instant adventures to level because you get more XP from it. The game world is empty of new players. Rifts are not being closed so they are all over the place. You will run into one every 100 yards now and you can’t solo them. The rift mobs overrun all the outdoor questing hubs and kill NPCs.
