An interesting case study might be Vendetta Online (w.r.t. Eve Echoes and V4); I’ve played it crossplatform between PC and mobile since 2011. Like Bree, I prefer PC for its superior control scheme, but it’s nice to sometimes log in via mobile and make a little progress that carries over next time I fire up my Mac.

I’ve not played SWTOR in about 6 years, but still have fond memories of the class stories in general and that Imperial Agent storyline in particular.

Even though DDO hasn’t been hit nearly as badly as LOTRO by server problems (other than that one server which had the 3 week rollback), the way SSG are so badly mishandling communication is tanking my enthusiasm for playing DDO as well – right now I’m only logging in for daily dice and MJ’s stream nights.

Allods boi back at it again! The basic talents in Allods are your skills. You pick what abilities you want. Then on top of it is a Talent Grid that is like a massive checkerboard where you can place points into adjacent skill modifiers and class modifiers (Like how a paladin can get an additional fourth “faith” shield that holds damage you receive to allow you to react to it appropriately before it hits you like a future seeing tank). Then after that at level cap is the spark grid which is a web of stat upgrades. So while I dislike the layering of complexity on top of old systems they did include upgrades that are separate from just loot drops.

Because it is published by my.com many will not look at it and would tell others to avoid it.

I went to look at it based on this comment and saw my.com in the google link….nope.

Yeah, I hear you. It’s a bummer though for the original dev team. They did good work.

I agree. Players (and reporters) want good communication from game devs. By “Communication” players want devs to give good news *and* bad news too. And by “bad news” we want:
1) What are the obstacles?
2) What are you doing to overcome them?

Silence / obfuscation allows fears to grow, often of even WORSE obstacles than what you have & sans hope of a fix.

Yes, I want Talent Trees with obvious differences, specifically how do I benefit and how do these differ. Telling me I get a boost in some random attribute I never heard of or how it affects my gameplay doesn’t help me … DCUO & STAR TREK ONLINE.

Eg, if the Talent Tree is Psionics then make clear branches, Telepath (eg Reader let’s me read thoughts for better trades or better responses in conversations, buff in combat for knowing next move, detect someone in stealth; Sender let’s me end thoughts, lower aggro, pull aggro, boost stealth “these are not the droids”, attack your ally, defend me; Telekinetic, Teleporter, ESP, etc.). If I’m a Tank maybe I buff up on blocking attacks outright or healing from them or dodging them and maybe even deflecting them.

Also, can I skip making Talent Tree choices and get others? Do I have to pick everything before I can level up? Maybe I’m not sure in a particular category. My Travel and Defense skills are good so can I focus on Attack skills for the moment? At the risk of enraging Bree🤣, can I skip making a Crafting talent selection and focus Diplomacy or Research to be able to find better loot👍😁?

While not an MMO, how do you feel about the skill system in a game like un-modded Skyrim?

I felt like it had its fair share of bland % increases, but it was also like a whole bunch of talent trees to choose from at any one time. Of course, more options means a harder time balancing it all so I could see why that wouldn’t be done so much in an MMO.

That’s a great question – I don’t think I have looked at the base system in ages (yay mods), but iirc, it was basically skill-by-use with a perk system on top. Flexible, but also boring and exploitable. In tandem with scaling, it pretty much just gets out of your way, which I guess is a good thing – but it’s not a fun thing where I felt like I was making powerful, character-defining choices. On the other hand, I’m not sure that matters as much to me in a single-player RPG.

I had a mod for Oblivion that actually swapped over to one of the early Fallout systems (I forget which one), which was basically the AC system – do stuff, including exploring, and get experience, then turn that experience into the skills you want. I’d rather do that almost every time over dealing with a secondary trait system layered on top. I want control without fussing, I think.
