The Daily Grind: What’s your most embarrassing MMO fail story?

A while back my husband was playing Overwatch when he was in a match with two guys who obviously knew each other and both had poop-related names. At the end of the match, after my husband’s team had lost and the poop team had won, the pair of them cheerfully shouted, “YEAH, GET POOPED ON!” Definitely bizarre and a smidge embarrassing. I mean, you lost to these weirdos, but… at least they were entirely committed to the bit?

OK, so that’s not an MMO, but MMOs surely have weird fails like this, and let’s be honest, I just wanted to tell the “get pooped on!” victory cheer story because I giggle every time I think about it.

What’s your most embarrassing MMO fail story?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Numerous.
A not so mmo embarrassing moment was when I fell for the ole diablo2 Enigma switcheroo trade scam (last second switching Enigma for a worthless armor of same type that looks the same).
Bam, gone was everything I had spend 2 weeks of hardcore farming to get (nops I don’t bot in diablo2, it was all manual labor and trade flipping). Great learning lesson :D

This one still stings a bit! haha

I failed an MSQ trial in FFXIV Stormbringers three times before I was berated as being the worst healer anyone had ever grouped with. This stung. A lot. And I’ve never left something like that where I was actually in tears. Not only was I unable to get further in the MSQ, but after having healed for most of my 20 plus years MMO career, I was told I suck at it so bad that I should just stop trying. I ended my sub shortly after. It was truly a traumatic experience of how the people came off in the trial and pushed me away from a game I largely enjoy. It also led to personal behavior where I won’t group with strangers anymore unless I have friends with me.

I’m subbed again and I feel this strong need to beat it! I have a strategy to get through this MSQ trial. Since that was at the beginning of Stormbringers, people are probably mostly over-geared and know the strats inside out by now and I’m getting my Summoner prepped to go instead of White Mage. That way I’m not playing a pivotal role in the content. I’m also in the process of joining a guild of which I hope I can at least get encouragement and emotional support if it goes bad again. (But I hope not!) To keep myself from focusing too much on it, I’ve gotten heavily into crafting and that’s helped heaps in giving me something to do other than dungeons. Maybe I’ll luck out in getting a house when they open the new wards in a few months. I have gil to make, goals to fill and that keeps my mind away from that particular failure I’ve come to obsess over.

I was new to MMO’s and immediately became a tank in Star Wars the old republic. The rest is history but I could not tank Soa in Eternity Vault because the mechanic had him invincible unless a large stalagtite from above hit him. Well I didn’t have the skills to look up and the guild was understanding but week after week they were so nice about it but finally I learnded. Cringe when I look back …at Soa.

I keep loosing my Ascended Hammer in GW2, once it was during the launch week of GW2 Path of Fire back when I was Binge Drinking and I salvaged it. Earlier this year I was playing Inventory Wars with Alts and Bank Space only to accidentally vendor it while I was stoned.

Each time I had prompt excellent service with a speedy recovery of my Hammer, much faster than Thor during the Jason Aaron run in Marvel Comics.

Exploring, getting in a groove, not really paying attention to where I’m going… accidentally wandering into an area where the mobs are much higher than my level. Somehow, I got deep into their territory before any noticed me, probably because I was following the road. Fortunately, they weren’t strong enough to one shot me, so I had a few harrowing moments of running away and they didn’t kill me. BUT, I was so absorbed with escaping, panicking, that I wasn’t paying attention to where I was running, and I ran off a small cliff. Normally I wouldn’t have died, but I just had a sliver of health left after the high level mobs, so I died to fall damage.

Falling asleep at the keyboard during EQ XP camps. At the time I was grouping with a friend and a couple we had met online in EQ. We would find a good XP camp and I was working on a bard alt. Between spawns I would play the refreshment song to help with mana regen.

On more than one occasion I would wake up in my chair to find text messages from friend asking if I was there and concluding I had fallen asleep. He would bring in his wizard to port me away to safety. Good people.

The first time I ever ventured into instanced PVP in World of Warcraft (I don’t recall the set up except that it was a random 5 v 5) I died quite quickly. Not a surprise in itself. Unfortunately rather than rez at the starting point I decided to run back to my corpse just as I always did in open world PVE. Only I couldn’t find my corpse… if in fact I could corpse run in that instance, which I never quite worked out.

So I spent the rest of the match running around in circles as a ghost looking for something which may or may not have actually existed while being cursed out furiously by my unfortunate teammates. In hindsight I can see their point of view…
