Star Trek Online’s newest promotional ship in a lockbox angers fans for breaking the developers’ own rules

There’s always been some consternation between players of Star Trek Online and the Perfect World Entertainment marketing philosophy of adding new ships via lockboxes. Generally, a certain amount of grudging acceptance has been maintained because the developers have kept to a strict set of rules about lockbox ships. All of them are some combination of ships from non-playable factions, ships from other timelines, from wildly different points in the main timeline, or a customized and rare ship. Unfortunately, the latest promotional ship is based on Riker’s ship from Picard, which breaks every one of those rules and also has provoked no small amount of player ire.

Riker’s ship in that show is a common Starfleet ship that should be perhaps a decade old at most, and it is by all indications a fairly standard member of its class. The result has been a great deal of player anger at the fact that this ship should be, at the very most, a cash shop purchase instead of a rare promotional option. It’s nice that the To Hell With Honor TFO is coming back to cap off the game’s year-long event campaign for a free cash shop ship, but the current lockbox issues will probably leave a bad taste in everyone’s mouths.

You could complain at them, but historically we see that that makes zero difference they aren’t interested. The best way to show them how upset you are is to NOT buy the lockboxes. Hitting these companies in the wallet is the ONLY thing they take notice of.

When they made the t6 connie available, i knew what ever rules they had established about lockbox ships were out of the window. They were adamant CBS didnt want a t6 connie available for years, but then poof, money made. It doesnt surprise me they made rikers ship from picard a lockbox ship, what surprises me more they didnt do a USS titan lockbox with a t6 luna update yet. Good thing is i preferred spending my money on the support carriers( i like carriers overall) so ill be saving money this round of lockbox shenanigans.

It’s PWE they shouldn’t be angry about anything. You choose to play any of their games so you should not be surprised by anything they do for your money.

Oh, nevermind. It’s Perfect World. Why anyone is playing anything PWE is attached to is beyond me. This what they do. It’s like whining about Nexon.

Well, at least they can actually FLY the dang ship if they get it!

Not like another space sim where you can spend hundreds of dollars for a picture and a promise.

But can they really? Either way, you’re paying for something that doesn’t exist in reality…

The people walking away with a substantive benefit are the ones with your money.

I think the point it: At least the STO’s purchase is usable in some way as more than just a overpriced poster.

Up until the game goes under because they make such poor decisions that scare off actual paying customers…

But yeah, I haven’t made the mistake of funding that monstrosity. Probably won’t even if it does come to fruition…simply because it’s going to be another PvP wasteland like EVE…even if I was a fan of the Wing Commander series they are leeching the idea off of/building it from.

I’m not excusing STO, nor Cryptic. They’re as bad as they come. But at least, AT LEAST, they have something launched.

I got this ship and game package for $50 and fly it almost every day, I never have to buy a lootbox

and having actually played both games, its a no-brainer where I’d put mo money if I choose

Apples and Oranges as what you’re referring to are ‘Concept Sales’ where it’s clearly stated up front the ship they are buying is still being developed and there are no guarantees even that something won’t be changed ion said ship during said development process. the trade off – they pay less for the ship as once it is flight ready the price goes up a bit.

Any ship currently in the SC RMT store can be flown immediately after purchase.

Starfleet is a promise. I give my life for you, you give your life for me.
