Star Trek Online’s newest promotional ship in a lockbox angers fans for breaking the developers’ own rules

I'm sorry what.

There’s always been some consternation between players of Star Trek Online and the Perfect World Entertainment marketing philosophy of adding new ships via lockboxes. Generally, a certain amount of grudging acceptance has been maintained because the developers have kept to a strict set of rules about lockbox ships. All of them are some combination of ships from non-playable factions, ships from other timelines, from wildly different points in the main timeline, or a customized and rare ship. Unfortunately, the latest promotional ship is based on Riker’s ship from Picard, which breaks every one of those rules and also has provoked no small amount of player ire.

Riker’s ship in that show is a common Starfleet ship that should be perhaps a decade old at most, and it is by all indications a fairly standard member of its class. The result has been a great deal of player anger at the fact that this ship should be, at the very most, a cash shop purchase instead of a rare promotional option. It’s nice that the To Hell With Honor TFO is coming back to cap off the game’s year-long event campaign for a free cash shop ship, but the current lockbox issues will probably leave a bad taste in everyone’s mouths.
