The Daily Grind: What’s the weirdest stunt you’ve ever seen players pull in an MMO?

I’ve seen a lot of weird stuff in my day as an MMORPG player, but I’d never seen anyone eat 999 eggs before Ross Donovan did it in Final Fantasy XIV. Why did he eat 999 eggs? Because someone gave them to him. Because he could. Because it made for fun absurdist Twitch. Who knows. You can’t make this stuff up.

“I ate 999 eggs,” he says at the end. “I did this instead of actually leveling.”

I tried my best to get MOP’s Eliot to write about this, and he responded by telling me about some other weird stunts in the game that put this one to shame. I love MMO players sometimes.

What’s the weirdest stunt you’ve ever seen players pull in an MMO?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Not sure it’s a ‘stunt’, but there was a character named ‘Crazy Jack’ back when I played LOTRO who’d go around /fishslap’ing people.

I invested some of my Turbine Points (I used to farm deeds for piles of it.) just to buy the emote to sit there slapping him back and we often would sit there doing it for 15-30 minutes at some of the in-game holiday events.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but it was one of the few things that sticks out?

Also in FFXIV, BLU’s self-destructing so players can revive them to get to the top of jumping puzzles that they weren’t good enough or too lazy/impatient to get up to on their own. It got to the point where the Ninja Warrior obstacle course for Moonfire Faire or w/e started blocking all actions within it, and BLUs now have a 10 minute cooldown on all suicide spells.

Feels like the extreme of Mesmer portals for JPs in GW2.

I’m usually the one ‘doing’ the weird stunts, so…

About a few weeks or so after Amdapor Keep (Hard) was introduced in ‘A Realm Reborn’, I helped an FC mate clear the dungeon for their first time. I don’t remember the specifics of the conversation, but he was a Summoner and at some point I joked about an ‘All Smn’ run. Talked a bit more, then another FC mate agreed and said lets do it. We got decently into the dungeon but it fell apart without any true healing. So we shifted to an ‘Arcanist Job run’ with a Sch healer and 3 Smn. Took a couple tries with the last boss and getting used to trying to ‘tank swap’ Titan-Egi’s between two players since there’s no “emergency cooldown” for them. I think my PS4 still has chunks of it saved as video.

I’ve also ran the ‘Boss Gauntlet’ segment of “The Praetorium” practically in the nude. Few times really. Most recently, it happened because the party I was in were memeing about Dragoons, and how I (as a Dragoon main) hadn’t died during the entire run and thus was horrible as a Drg. So we got into the Nero fight, I unequipped everything but helmet, boots, weapon and accessories just before the fight started. Bosses die quickly even with the cap on Ilvl, so me going from about 9k to 4.5k didn’t hurt much.

I still couldn’t get my character killed though, and it encouraged the others to start fights quick as possible to make sure my catboy self couldn’t put on even some pants for all those serious cutscenes. Good times.

We used to do chicken races in LotRO fairly regularly. 5-50 chickens racing from shire to somewhere else in middle earth, if it was a big community event then we’d have spectators along the way. That was pretty cool!

there was one special event where the chickens were let into the Ettenmoors to PvP, but sadly servers couldn’t handle it so event was shut down before i got home from work and could play it. But, the videos looked awesome!

Also had a few giant conga lines on the go in various games, one I remember most was a conga-line pub crawl in LotRO. Can’t even remember why it happened, but was great seeing hundreds of players all in the same space having a laugh

Not stunt but…

Mag. There was this big hype about the introduction of the asian community to the game.

Our first game against em starts and we get to objectives and prepare for defending. We waited. We waited. Nothing.

So guys start pushing out towards their spawn, entire team is pushing now. We round a corner and…

The entire enemy team, all 32, were belly crawling towards the objective. Not crouch walking, not running. 32 players belly crawling at the same time.

We were in awe of their coherence as a team. Had to respect their teamwork and unity.

Of course we massacred them all but seriously never saw any other group so together on their squad play.

In raids, when someone asks “can you die if you jump there” i always type “let me try it” then jump, i died so many times, but this is science to do, and at least we know you should not jump.

The weirdest thing I participated in was a naked run through Tyria with a Guild and we could only keep our trinkets, head armor, and weapons, we were also required to use the Bobblehead effect. Basically it was a recruitment tactic, worked quite well, got low level people some levels through Map Exploration.

A naked gnome run comes to mind.

well, there was one time in wow, we were in a dungeon called BRD. there was this guy being afk and we were just waiting for him and discussing our next move. suddenly the afk guy jumped up and run into next room!! our team leader was yelling his name into teamspeak but it was too late! 10, 20, nay hundreds of little dragon hatchling added because he ran over all their eggs.

we tried to get the situation under control but we had no chance..
it was good fun!
