Warframe’s ‘great ensmallening’ updates will shrink down the game’s file size and optimize performance

Apparently, Warframe could stand to lose some weight; after three open worlds, over a dozen tile-sets, 28 quests, almost 500 weapons, over a thousand mods, and several remasters that updated older content, the game’s file size has reached megachonker status, so the devs at Digital Extremes are going to perform what they’re calling a “great ensmallening.”

This trim down of Warframe will require players to download some remastered content, but the efforts will ultimately reduce about 15GB of space by the time all is said and done. Furthermore, these refinements will improve performance thanks to new texture data compression tech as well as changes to lightmaps. These so-called “mini remasters” will be broken up in to three pieces and will release over the rest of this year, the first of which will include the aforementioned lightmap adjustments.

Place your wagers now on how many minutes before her first stream after this MJ will start this patch process up… 😁

Hopefully DE gets it out early enough this week not to completely force the issue. I expect this patch will take a while. The first piece is apparently something like 6-ish GB, and then it’s going to have to process as it replaces old data with shiny new data. I’m expecting that with my connection it’s going to be an “overnight” sort of patch. So it would be really nice if it comes out Wednesday or Thursday, and not Friday afternoon. OnO

I like that, all games should try to do this.
