Phantasy Star Online 2 delivered a glut of New Genesis gameplay goodness

Latch your rods and cones onto this one, boys and girls, because Phantasy Star Online 2 is showing how it’s going to get a whole lot more pretty come next year. At the Tokyo Game Show this week, SEGA demoed gameplay from the sweeping New Genesis update — and it’s all the eye candy you could ask for.

New Genesis is not just going to be a visual overhaul, either. SEGA is turning PSO2 into more of an MMO with “open field” environments that aren’t as instanced as they currently are in the game while also adding a day/night cycle, weather, and more movement options.

The revamp is scheduled for 2021 and will run parallel to the current iteration of Phantasy Star Online 2. Players will be able to move their characters between the two versions of the game when it releases.

Hope they take this time to revamp some of their monetization stuff too, but guessing that won’t happen.

Looks like they took Xenoblade X and made a proper MMO out of it.

Really excited for this, PSO2 was a faceroll snoozefest by the time it got to us.

PSO2:NG seems to be the holy grail of action-combat MMO’s I was wanting for since Tera released and failed to deliver.

Might actually play when this hits.

Had to get a friend to stream me the video over discord, as the youtube video is blocked in Denmark despite the game servicing my country. Looks very cool

I’m so excited for this. The launch of PSO2 was a very overwhelming experience for me. So many mechanics and information overload a little bit. Excited that this seems to be more of a traditional MMO experience with an overworld rather than a lobby game. And love that both of the games will be continuing.

Agreed, I tried to play PSO2 for first time at Steam Launch. While the new player experience is decent, it is very clear this game has been out for yeeeeeaaars and there are so many diferent mechanics and things built upon the original that there is ALOT.

I also didnt play much because I found myself doing the same instances alot.

Yeah I had played a good chunk of the JP version but was looking forward to having a similar experience to the old days. That didn’t happen and instead I zoomed in levels like crazy while barely doing anything. Got really tiring to me because I don’t like the barrage of instant gratification while explaining nothing to me about wtf to do.

At this point I’d rather wait and see what New Genesis brings unless there’s some crossover event that gives exclusive stuff that you can only get from stomaching PSO2 proper.
