The Daily Grind: Which musical act do you wish would show up in your core MMO?

Last week, we saw no less than three announcements of MMOs and MMO-adjacent titles collaborating with musical acts and pop stars in their worlds. Fortnite played host to BTS, PUBG Mobile is working with BLACKPINK, and Roblox is holding an album launch party with Ava Max.

I’m of multiple minds about this. There’s the cynical side of me that wants to eyeroll at collabs and marketing ploys and attempts to swap audiences for the obvious stunts that they are. Then there’s the part of me that knows damn good and well that if my favorite band showed up in an MMORPG, I would lose my damn mind. The pragmatic part of me thinks these are smart and safe venues for live acts during a pandemic, so I’m all about that. But then the snarky part rears its head again and wants to side-eye shallow titles like battle royales for trying to rewrite what they are on the fly. We already had online games where you can put on stage acts, guys. We call them MMOs. (Roblox gets more of a pass on that front!)

What’s your opinion on these types of promos, and which musical act do you wish would show up in your core MMO?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Hard to say honestly. It has to be something to fit with the mmo. ETC is probably still the best kind of fit to date for me just because it works in WoW lore while also just sounding really good in the long run. Outside of that in something nonsense and just goofy like Fortnite I don’t mind them doing mashups and promos since like i said, it’s just another goofy game. But if it’s supposed to be a more serious game it should work for the game. People also forget that there was an older mmo, Chronicles of Spellborn, which used a rock band to make a trailer for the game. It worked pretty well too.

None. I’m ok with listening to my stuff by myself and having the company focus on things that actually matter.

To be fair tho, i kinda wish a concert would happen in ESO, so the PvE players would feel what is like in Cyrodiil and force Zenimax to actively improve the servers.

None, this is a yikes concept.

I think this is an awesome idea in general because it helps people to socialize by experiencing this event together, and I wish to see as much musical acts in MMORPG games as possible. This is why I generally dislike when the lazy game developers keep re-using the kind of setting and lore where, for example, seeing a BTS concert in-game would feel “weird”, as opposed to seeing such concert in a game with more modern setting or less medieval fantasy setting. And why I also wish that Epic would finally wake up and make a proper single MMO virtual world where all kind of players with all kind of preferences would find something fun to do, doesn’t matter if players like BR arenas or grinding PvE dungeons or constructing their own megacities – Epic Games have huge amount of talented programmers and world-class game engine to make this happen, not to mention a lot of money they are still earning from Fortnite, since they’re the only company which understands the importance of having such musical events in multiplayer games.

P.S: even games with your standard boring “medieval” setting can have more modern music performances (perhaps not with current pop artists but at least in terms of other type of music and music instruments) if they won’t take themselves seriously and would put “fun” above anything else. And for those people who think “mah lore! it does not allow for such blasphemy!” – screw those fun-hating people ;-)

The work of pop musicians is utterly incompatible with the settings of the online games I play.

I’d personally love to see 100s of acts in Secret World Legends as the game already has a big music scene.

AQ3D does a good job with these kind of events. While they can’t draw the numbers of Fortnite, they do the artists justice and have a fun setup.

This is the exact type of content that turns me away from MMO events. While I think that music and sound design are some of the most underrecognized aspects of great games, having a band or artist just show up in an MMO for an event would be awful for me as a player.

I’m glad that it had success for Fortnite players, but this type of crossover brings nothing to MMOs or musical performance for me.

It might depend on the game. AdventureQuest 3D doesn’t take itself particularly seriously, and the NPCs seem to be fully aware of the 4th wall anyway. And heavy metal concerts being invaded by actual demons trying to devour the audience just seems to fit, I guess.

Fair enough, which is probably why I’m not playing those games. Cool for those that enjoy that stuff.

The entire idea is so weird. I mean, for FFXIV, I could see the Primals popping up in the game the same way ETC shows up in WoW. YoshiP has self-inserted himself into the game, why not have Soken show up as well. FFXIV already has glow sticks from an event so uh, two orchestrions and a microphone!?

And nooooooow I’ve got Mindless Self Indulgence playing in my head. *sings* “Two orchestrions and a microphone, can you believe that I write this shit..?”

Considering that the MMOs or “MMO adjacent” games that I play are Warframe, Star Trek Online, and Ark: Survival Evolved I don’t know that any band *could* give a concert in any of those in a way that wouldn’t be jarringly out of place. Although I can think of a few I’d love to see try it in Ark. Mostly because I’d love to see the stage show invaded by a random raptor pack that tries to eat them.
