Wurm Online patches in improvements to sacrificing items

Players in Wurm Online deserve to get stuff when they sacrifice things. Not things like time or money, but in-game items used for Favor. The game’s latest patch improves that particular system by no longer discarding excess Favor if your bar is full or would be overfilled when you sacrifice something; instead, you have that amount stacked as pending Favor, which decreases over time at a low rate. You can keep track of that and thus make important determinations about how much Favor you should bank up before going down for a good old-fashioned sacrificial rite.

The patch also allows new characters to travel directly to Defance via a portal, with the spawn rates in Defance having been corrected from earlier bugs. Add in a smattering of bug fixes and balance changes, and players should hopefully have a better time across the board when sacrificing and playing in general.

Sacrificing is mainly used in the ‘priest’ mechanics…which for Wurm, is basically the ‘mages’ from other games but using ‘power’ granted by the deity they pray to, to achieve specific spells, but with a highly convoluted mess of inter-dependency mechanics surrounding it.

In this game, it’s really hard to go pure priest (Though not totally impossible)…unless you have the backing of others…because once you go priest, you lose access to a lot of the normal mechanics of the game because they didn’t want them to be ‘all power-full’, and they wanted to force inter-dependent behavior…which most people playing get around by just having priest alts. (One for each in-game ‘god’)

Priesting requires becoming a ‘follower’ (Priests can convert…the original ones on a server are created by devs.) of one of the ‘gods’, then getting a certain skill up to 30 before you can become a Priest yourself. After becoming a Priest, you lose access to multiple things (For example the ability to improve items, and depending on the god…some various things the god wouldn’t like.), but gain access to spells you otherwise couldn’t use.

The other use for sacrificing, is a mechanic they put in that allows you to sacrifice a rare item you’ve created during a ‘moment of inspiration’ (MOI) that randomly happens during play…to get a full food/water/stamina bar refresh. (100% on everything except the 4 newer bars..at least as far as I last knew…which apparently default off now.)

Other than that, sacrificing is only really useful for essentially deleting something from the game world. (Instead of wasting your time with a trash bin…which has a mechanic that with 1 hour in, it damages everything put in it a tiny bit, then 2nd hour just destroys it.) It basically destroys whatever you’ve put inside the altar to give you some amount of favor after you have stood there at the altar ‘sacrificing’ to it (Has a timer bar you have to fill to finish, they just lowered it…that’s what this update was about.).

There is also some ‘deed benefits’ if you sacrifice loads and loads and loads, but that’s highly pointless to waste your time doing, because it’s a broken mechanic that was intended to make a PvP deed gain boosts, but they set the decay rate for it to fall off of deeds at a ridiculously high rate, so you’d have to find thousands of things to destroy to keep it up. (I tested/played with this kind of thing on my own PvE deed. Used to destroy all the food items I didn’t want from forage on my deed which gives +health to deed bonuses…but it fell off so fast every time I did it.) The only one that’s worth it, is saccing (the in-game lingo for sacrificing) the random Valrei items that sometimes spawn, and those are so few and far between to find, that even that doesn’t keep the boost it gives up for too long.

I know, I know, I say too much/give too much info on these articles. But you want to understand the depth of the game that is there…

Anyone bored of their current selection of games and curious/serious about wanting to learn the mechanics and play Wurm Online casually, let me know. I’m on Melody server and use the official Melody server Discord to communicate. I’m a moderator and I’d be glad to help people with a ton of questions.

It’s a terraforming, building, crafting game with its flaws but also a lot of cool ideas going for it. I was told that if I could handle Wurm’s grind, I could handle any MMORPG grind. This is not far from the truth but in some twisted way, it’s satisfying to see the end results of your labor.
