It’s a bit funny that Star Trek: Picard takes place in the future of all the actual television series, but in the not-too-distant past of Star Trek Online, meaning that major events like the attack on Utopia Planitia on Mars are all in the rear view of the game’s actual timeline. So on that level, it is perhaps a bit odd that there is a new task force on the way in which players get to take part in a re-enactment of that battle. Then again, as the fiction introducing the task force makes clear, this is a unique case.
The preamble is that the invasion is a known historical event which was, in many ways, a tragic failure on behalf of Starfleet. Thus, the holodeck recreation is being put forth as a battle which the participants cannot win… but also one that need not be lost in the direct sense, as it is a lesson to be carried forward.
