The Daily Grind: Which MMO NPC deserves more screen time?

Many people know that I have a deep affection for Bingo Boffin in Lord of the Rings Online. The well-meaning but sometimes daft Hobbit adventurer starred in a very long quest chain — and yet, it wasn’t enough for me. It’s been great that he’s come back for more tales during the Halloween event, but I won’t rest until we get a Bingo Boffin expansion pack!

Sometimes certain special NPCs are like that. These characters rise above the rest of the crowd to become fan-favorites — or maybe just your personal favorite. And as a result of that fandom, you want to see more of them.

So which NPCs in your MMOs deserve more screen time? What would you like to see the writers do with these characters?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Edda Pureheart, FF14. I really don’t think there’s much more to do with her in in FF14, but I would actually like to see references to her sneak into future FF games, Edda and her story have been some of the standout stuff in ARR for me.

(only at end of HW, don’t tell me if she shows up again in the future!)

Many of them, but first they deserve better writing. The problem there largely being that MMOs write what developers already decided, with a shortage of care about any problems and of hiring more talent on that front, and the stories suffer more often than not.

Offline RPGs do the same rather often, unfortunately. Some of the best experiences in games are where this is not true, and the writing was well established first.
