The Daily Grind: What’s the goofiest not-an-MMO acronym you’ve seen an MMO try to adopt?

There was a phase our genre went through about five or so years ago when every new MMO – even the ones that most people would’ve agreed were pretty standard MMORPGs – were trying to rebrand themselves with brand-new acronyms and genres. It wasn’t a new trend, of course; ArenaNet tried it with CORPG (competitive online roleplaying game) back in the aughts, but it really peaked a few years ago. We had a game use MEOW (multiplayer evolving online world), MMOSSL (massively multiplayer online shooter slash loot game), OTWG (online throne war game), and most recently, MSARPG (multiplayer survival action roleplaying game).

I tend to let MMOFPS and MMOARPG and MMOARG slide because those really do feel more like hybrid genres than like an attempt to weasel out of calling a game an MMO. But some of these others… I wish they’d just stop.

What’s the goofiest not-an-MMO acronym you’ve seen an MMO try to adopt – and what should it be using instead?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Wasn’t the game or the devs, it was a group of players. The acronym was BOHICA. It’s an unofficial US Military acronym similar to the more well known FUBAR and SNAFU. It means, “Bend Over Here It Comes Again” and it was in reference to how much shit got broken every time the devs would patch the game. It didn’t survive all that long and I suspect the people I see that wax nostalgic about it either didn’t play it or did but either exploited some of the more glaring bugs or didn’t get far enough along to have much exposure to the systems that were totally broken.

Idk I still think MOBA sucks…

Easily the one coined by disney online for toontown online back in 2003. They called it a MMP (Massively Multiplayer). Still cracks me up even years later. https://www.ign.com/articles/2003/05/05/toontown-online-launch-announcement

OMG (online multiplayer game) may be top goofy but it actually covers all types of what we currently refer to as MMO (which is not even an acronym..is there even consensus that it is short for mmorpg?).
But as there are arguably hardly a handful of actual mmorpg left, I appreciate the effort of defining whatever type of game someone is makin, instead of falsely labelling it mmorpg.

FTP – which usually turn out to be anything but.

I’ve never really noticed, to be honest. Star Trek Online is an MMO, last I bothered to check they weren’t pretending otherwise. And Warframe doesn’t seem to even bother, Warframe is just Warframe. Anyone trying to hammer it into some kine of preset genre is on their own.

Whilst those acronyms may well be goofy, I will applaud them anyway because those games were not massively multiplayer (as far as i can tell anyway), so it makes sense not to call themselves something that they aren’t.

It’s probably not correct, but I chose to believe that MEOW was used by Hello Kitty Online.

I can not stand acronyms and the tendency of people wanting to create and toss them into everything. After decades of dealing with them in the military and with the government in general and the literal books and books they have just on them, I am burnt out on the whole concept. Acronyms can die in a dumpster fire. I feel better getting that off of my chest. :)

When I start to see acronyms being tossed around I go into what I refer to as “Charlie Brown mode”. You know when the adults talk and the kids only here “blah, blah, blah, blah”? I do that when I read acronyms anymore. Bree you triggered me! LOL

I feel the same way. After being subjected to them by the Army (and I was MI, we have acronyms for secret acronyms, it gets beyond ridiculous) I went and got an Emergency Management degree which is just as bad, if not worse the the Military. I work in Technology now and there are acronyms like crazy here too and a lot of them vary depending on context. It’s insane and only ever gets worse. As I mentioned in my comment, BOHICA. Every time a new product launches or someone thinks it’s a great idea to “improve” a process and shoves a powerpoint with more acronyms than actual text in my face I just want to scream.

Not really goofy but worth a mention – Secret World Legends calling themselves a “Shared World RPG”. It’s actually a good description because it’s not really multiplayer in the sense you’re matching up with other players or can only play with friends. It’s basically just an MMORPG where the zone instance has a far smaller player limit. So you’re encountering random players in the world – just far, far less.
