The Daily Grind: Which MMO does the creepiest Halloween?

While pretty much every MMORPG out there right now is running some sort of harvest or Halloween event, usually you get the same angle. It’s all candy corn, cute disguises, trick-or-treating, Smashing Pumpkins (both the band and the activity), and a not-scary-at-all seasonal overlay in major city hubs.

But are there MMOs out there that actually try to inject a bit of actual creepiness and horror into their Halloween events? If so, which would you say does the best job with diving into the darker and more unsettling elements of the holiday?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Guild Wars Halloween (both versions) has an extremely dark backstory. It’s easy to miss because it’s presented in such a tongue-in-cheek way, but if you listen to all the dialog and dig into the histories, there’s a lot of really twisted stuff.

The question should include “other than The Secret World.”

Indeed. Everyone just point at TSW and done.

TSW had the most creepiness and a game I was truly hyped for, but it just never grabbed me with their combat.

The Secret World was my favorite MMO to immerse myself in spooky content for several years, but I didn’t play the game regularly and it got to a point I wasn’t geared/leveled enough to do the content and I stopped.

This year I’ve turned to ESO, which is doing a good job with all the spooky! The Witch’s Festival is pretty fun and creepy, with the added fun of it being the coven house you can earn and all the different furniture that can be tossed into it to make it a creepy little place to have fun with.

I can’t really tell. Whenever any fictional content starts to scare me or creep me out my brain instantly and autonomously breaks me out of being immersed and crashes me back into reality. Thanks to that I tend to see horror content as mostly cringe-worthy messes, with the best ones reaching the level of comedic relief.

On the plus side, I’m immune to in-game jump-scares and horror never caused me nightmares.

The only game that’s ever made me jump-scare is Ark. When you’re out on foot at night and a raptor suddenly is in your face, I’ve jumped. :)

As others stated TSW, no other mmo is remotely creepy. Maybe destiny 2 when that axe demon shows up outta nowhere in the haunted forest.

Best Halloween in my opinion was Wildstar actually. Those events were pretty interesting/fun if IRC.

HH in wow is classic, I really wish blizzard would buff the gear rewards for seasonal events to a reasonably rewarding level.

I think the answer is obvious.

This would of been easier to answer if you asked for the most “cringe worthy” instead. >.<

Wait. Which game has the band?

Guild Wars 2?

Reader

That does not sound like Smashing Pumpkins.

Reader

Why would it, all you asked for was that game with the band in it.

Reader

Yes. The band referenced in the post.

“ It’s all candy corn, cute disguises, trick-or-treating, Smashing Pumpkins (both the band and the activity), and a not-scary-at-all seasonal overlay in major city hubs.”

But thanks for reading my comment before Justin’s post. Makes me feel extra special. XD

No worries, I usually skim the Daily Grind to get the fist of the discussion content while skipping the fluff.
