Former WoW story VP Chris Metzen returns to gaming with new tabletop company

Chris Metzen hasn’t made a ton of headlines since his retirement from Blizzard back in 2016, but as turns out, that’s because he’s been busy putting together a new gaming company. Don’t get too excited, MMORPG fans, because it’s not an MMO studio. It’s a tabletop gaming company. It’s called Warchief Gaming, an obvious and cheeky nod to Warcraft’s Thrall, whom he voiced.

“Today, two former VPs of Blizzard Entertainment, Chris Metzen, Senior Vice President of Story and Franchise Development, and Mike Gilmartin, Vice President of Quality Assurance, announced the creation of Warchief Gaming. Previously a tabletop gaming club founded two years ago by the longtime friends, Warchief Gaming is making the leap from a tabletop gaming destination to a brand-new development studio focused on creating tabletop games and telling stories across all media types. The members-only club will remain operational and will be located at the company’s headquarters in Orange County, CA. […] Metzen and Gilmartin are committed to enhancing the community and elevating the services that gaming clubs can provide, while at the same time building their own worlds and products. This will continue to be a focus for the Warchief team, and the founders have already tapped the talent of former Blizzard Entertainment game designer Ryan Collins (Hearthstone) as Lead Product Developer to help turn Warchief’s big ideas into reality.”

I remember his interview from four years ago (great job btw) and thinking to myself this guy won’t stay away for long. He’s married with kid(s), there’s no way he’s staying home:)

“The reason I use the word ‘retire’ is because I’m not going to some other company or starting up new projects or anything remotely like that.”

Interesting. Wish they would make this announcement when they have an actual product to show me, but eh, I guess some news is better than no news.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I checked their website and saw basically nothing. So it seems like wasted PR and now I’ll forget all about them.
