Path of Exile pushed its 3.13 patch to January to dodge Cyberpunk 2077’s launch

Grinding Gear Games isn’t playing any games with the launch of Path of Exile’s next league: The New Zealand studio just flat-out delayed it to make sure it won’t be wrecked by Cyberpunk 2077’s new date.

“Yesterday, CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will now be released on December 10,” GGG wrote last night. “We do not want to put our players in a position of having to choose between these two games, so we have decided to step out of the way and delay the release of Path of Exile 3.13 until January. We still expect to finish 3.13 by early/mid-December. The scope of this expansion will remain unchanged. During the month of delay before release, we will start work on the 3.14 expansion.”

Instead, the team will run “at least one multi-week event” over Christmas to keep players entertained.

“While this delay will hopefully not affect our development schedule, it will probably cause our release schedule to change a little bit during 2021. We’ll post details about this as soon as we have more information about these dates and when we’ll be announcing 3.13.”

Now GGG has to hope Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t delayed for the fourth time, though if the patch is really ready in time, maybe GGG would deploy it anyway in such a case!

I’m not much bothered by the delay, but the reasoning has an odd smell about it. The Harvest league began the same day that The Last of Us 2 was released. Sure, it was a PS exclusive, but it was still a majorly hyped release.

I wasn’t planning on playing next league cause I’ll be ass deep in the Destiny 2 power grind but this seems pretty strange decision to me. Like you’re a company who’s business model revolves around releasing 3 month long league cycles throughout the year. There’s going to be big games throughout the year all the time. Cyberpunk is big, WOW Shadowlands is going to be big and there’s going to be others too. Adjusting your schedule to try to accommodate these things just seems silly cause soon as their shit dies down another cycle for you is going to be picking right back up.

Of course all the players are supportive of GGG and understand that the devs want to play Cyberpunk too /s

Honestly not worried personally as it is only a game at the end of the day and I have bigger worries to deal with. That said I really do hope they nail 3.13 on all platforms or the 65 page (at time of typing) of comments on the forums about this will look like small fry and burn a lot of bridges I imagine.
