The Daily Grind: What MMO really shouldn’t attempt a classic server?

Back in August, Standing Stone Games told players to stop trying to make a classic Lord of the Rings Online server happen. It is not going to happen. “You think it was perfect back then, but I remember our bug queues at the time and I can assure you it was not,” SSG’s Jeff Libby said. “Thirteen years of bug-fixes just disappearing? Yikes!”

He makes a good point, and it’s certainly a more convincing argument than “you think you do, but you don’t,” right? On top of all that, LOTRO already has a specialty progression server that does a lot to fill the niche, so of all the core MMORPGs on the market, it’s one that probably doesn’t need to throw money at such a project.

But I bet we can think of others. What MMO really shouldn’t attempt a classic server? Which games would be detracting from their core playerbases or just be wasting time if they put one together?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
