Massively OP Podcast Episode 297: Beyond Light

Hey, Bree isn’t here on the podcast today! It’s going to be anarchy, fridge raiding, and free love! Or it’ll be Chris and Justin going Beyond Light with Destiny 2, grabbing all of SWTOR’s daily rewards, checking out Nexon’s and Pearl Abyss’ quarterly reports, and gabbing about what books should be made into MMOs.

It’s the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your question to the show, use this link or call in to our voicemail at (734) 221-3973.

Congrats/condolences to Bree on her home ownership IRL expansion content.

Enjoyed the episode as usual, especially No Man’s Sky discussion. Interested to see how Chris feels about vanilla/normal mode while trying to build a base. My lengthiest playtime with NMS has been in “creative” mode because of unlimited resources allowing base building without logistic constraints, e.g. no windows for you since the main ingredient doesn’t exist on this planet.

Don’t think I’m an EVE Online fanboy/girl- full disclosure I’m hardly playing ATM as real life is hard enough- but wonder how much Chris and/or Justin have played the game? I get the rep EVE players have, but in my experience the EVE forums and sub-redit posts negativity vortex are far worse than what I’ve experienced while playing. Yes, gankers exist but I’ve thwarted and blown up my share of them by taking precautions. Most other players are too busy doing their own thing to mess with anyone.

Anyway, enjoyed the episode with lots of genuine laughs which are priceless these days.

@Chris- apologies, just saw your extensive EVE critique on previous Choose My Adventure series!

I totally agree with Chris about that ESO quest. (It’s called “Manor of Masques,” by the way.) I don’t want to say more because if anyone hasn’t played it, it would lose a lot of punch if you didn’t get to discover it step by step. It’s one of the most memorable sidequests I’ve ever played, though.

And here I thought that question got skipped since I bundled it in with another. Whoops! Thank you for taking the time to answer it.

I think Justin covered how to come back to an MMO pretty well. I echo the sentiment that, at least combat-wise, to try things out in a low stress environment, typically open world, so as to get back in the habit of things. You can make mistakes without having to worry much, if at all, about negatively affecting others.

It also helps me to not broadly worry about everything that’s new, but to focus on what’s in front of me and learn as I go along. If I don’t, it can be too easy to overwhelm myself and not bother. (This mentality can also apply to joining an established MMO.)

That’s not to say developers couldn’t do a better job of acclimating returning players.

Justin, you can play Minecraft together on switch/PC if you have the Bedrock version. For PC, you can buy it through the Microsoft Store. Bedrock is the newer mainline version that replaced the more moddable Java version on PC. The switch only has the bedrock version.

Regarding Destiny 2…

Europa is supposedly free for everyone along with all the other destinations in the game. The story and other specific features (Stasis Class, Raids, Exotics, etc) are locked to the new $40 expansion.

Many of the original game destinations (Titan, Io, Mercury and Mars) were vaulted and removed from the game along with the original Destiny 2 Red War, Curse of Osirus, and Warmind campaigns. These locations will be coming back in the future once they can be overhauled change to work with the new host control and possibly revamped content.

The broadstrokes story updates without any specific spoilers is the Darkness (the antithesis of the Traveler) has returned to the system. This naturally has lots of ripple effects beyond just those planets disappearing as there’s lots of other races in the system (Hive, Fallen, Cabal) as well the first of which we see with Beyond Light and the Fallen.

Much the Beyond Light content is time gated. There’s triumphs associated with things not even in the game at this time. Whether this was planned or due to Covid is hard to tell as they did the same with Shadowkeep. It’s been received luke warmly however as they just made like 75% of the weapons in the game useless and added back very few to compensate. Like anything there’s good and bad, and I’d argue the good and bad of this expansion area bout on par right now but probably will weigh to good as things come time unlocked.

The new season started today and has, arguably, even bigger story strokes and movements than the expansion had. I can’t even broadstrokes it without being spoilery as fuck but if you played Forsaken it’s pretty huge. The new seasonal mechanic is alright, you do stuff, earn lures, and lure out a boss you kill for new loot. Pretty good system, can really target specific items/rolls which is good.

There’s a new tutorial (which you can access in the tower) that will get you re-acclimated with the game and supposed to be better suited for returning/new players but I haven’t done it yet.

If by Chris “rant” you mean low-key, understated response, then yes- Chris rants are worth staying for. Bree “rants” are equally reasonable but more likely to result in my feeling outraged over sketchy industry practices…

Thankfully my liver got a break this week. My “take a shot every time Bree says ‘you know what I’m saying'” had a bye week.

“Star Wars Galaxies” was our signal to do a shot… three of us are in rehab, the fourth in our poor little guild died of alcohol poisoning.
