WoW Classic starts Naxxramas raid attument while World of Warcraft nerfs gear

World of Warcraft Classic is certainly feeling the pinch of Shadowlands attention deficit disorder, so the opening of Naxxramas in early December can’t come soon enough. For those who want to be raiding this floating death fortress on Day One, Blizzard has unlocked the ability to go through the attunement process.

“We have updated WoW Classic to make the NPC Archmage Angela Dosantos available at Light’s Hope Chapel,” the studio explained. “Now, if you wish to complete your attunement to Naxxramas in advance of the raid going live on December 3, you can visit the Archmage and take care of it.”

Not to be outdone by preparatory patches, World of Warcraft proper is readying Patch 9.0.2 with a few adjustments for next week’s expansion. This includes nerfing some “disproportionately powerful” pieces of gear, including the Heart of Azeroth’s secondary stats and a whole lot of trinkets. Patch 9.0.2 will be the Shadowlands content release with the new zones, covenants, soulbinds, and levels.

Got my attunement last night, and killed a bunch of horde while I was at it. Good times. Can’t seem to get into retail. 🤷‍♀️

Is it just me or are the “here’s your super item to carry the whole expansion” (be it Heart of Azeroth, legendary cloak, artifact, or whatever) just an entirely disappointing mechanic to anyone else?

“Now I can look forward to no new gear for that slot for a whole expansion, and you as Dev’s then only need to deprecate that one thing in your next expansion* to invalidate everything I worked for! Wheee….”

*you know, the old borrowed power thing we’ve been talking about lately.

It’s iterative. It’s still there, just now they moved it onto Covenants instead of it being an item. Since, instead of it being a piece of gear, you level up your Covy bro of choice.

But they do that to have some sort of grind to keep people on track and time gate things for players.

It’s a combination of a few rather bad choices Blizzard has long been doing that started to really dig its roots into the design in Mists of Pandaria proper and has only evolved since… like… a Rattatta making its nest in some Pokemart’s dumpster where they tossed out a bunch of long-expired Rare Candies.

Did it level up and evolve? Sure, but… not in a way anyone really wants to deal with.

It feels like Blizzard is desperate to have some defining and all-encompassing ‘mechanic’ for every expansion. And rather than invest time in making it work long-term and balance its existence going forward? They decided to just make it mandatory for any sort of ‘progression’ no matter the content and treat it like a wheelbarrow–constantly making the player fill it with dirt and junk up to the end, only to tell them to dump it and go back to the start to do it again.

You’re not wrong, but how dumb are we to keep paying for it?

So far I’m resisting giving them money for this expansion. A first for me with WoW. I’m so unhappy with the repeated experience they keep selling us.
